Not hart to find, but the barricades and rostrumfor the Thanksgiving Parade were there yet.

My first Bench mark....in the middle of NYC!! great adventure in finding this one.

Cold, cold, cold, but fun, fun, fun to find my first benchmark! We took a long time searching this one down, but we kept widening the circle and made the find! WooHoo! A great day in NYC

My first Benchmark! Found on it cold caching day with Mamacapp, GH22 and 68TR250. These may be fun to start looking for.

This would be a great place for a 2fer ... Found it after a relatively short search. My sister Mamacapp posted the image of it. Also on hand was Cloban and GH22. Cold day but was thrilled to make a Benchmark grab on 12/12/12 and grab my first NY geocaches.

What better way to celebrate 12-12-12 than spending the day with my family caching in New York. It took all of us to snag this one. 68TR250 to teach us what we were looking for. Me to get us in the general direction. CloBan and greyhorse22 to get their gps s going and finally greyhorse22 to think outside the box and make the find.

We found this benchmark after doing the South Central Park Whereigo cache. Locating this benchmark was a cinch by viewing past photos; however, a group of kids were blocking the GZ. We went into the shops nearby to wait them out and found the benchmark clear when we got out.

Nice quick easy find

It took some time to find this disc, since I was looking everywhere but the real place.
It was much bigger than I expected (this was the first one I've seen) and a lot nicer as well.
The rain kept people from sitting on it this morning.

photoKU1438
Rain and cloudy skies gave the GPSr a hard time to get a signal. I found the disc way before getting a position.

Took a bit, and I was unable to find the other benchmark near by...

1st benchmark ever.

This was the first benchmark I found while in NYC.

Just happened upon it while attending Christo and Jeane-Claude's "The Gates"

Found it with Harry.

Workmen were dismantling the vendors' stalls near the grandstands for viewing the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The benchmark was blocked off. I climbed over a few fences to observe the station.

Really! It's so obvious, but would we have noticed it otherwise? And indeed, description is more helpful than GPS... but pictures say even more than the description!

photoKU1438 - Found!
KU1438 - take a close look...

i found it just as described. When you get near a benchmark in NYC bring along a printout or electronic copy of the description. They are a far better source than the GPS which seem to often be way off! (Getting a fix among the tall buildings can be hard too).

Very easy find. Thanks to Zhanna for the pictures, made it a quickie.

This was our first New York City benchmark find. I figured this would be an easy one, but we've learned not to trust the coordinates for most of these benchmarks. So when we got to Columbus Circle, Aaron headed right for a stone bench, where he sat down and took out my binder of cache and benchmark printouts. Right then, I spotted the disk -- on the wall directly behind his head! According to my GPS, the coordinates and elevation were close, and the description was right on (except that I wouldn't call the wall pink). The disk is in excellent condition.

Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1952 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1952 AT NEW YORK. AT NEW YORK, IN BOROUGH OF MANHATTAN, AT COLUMBUS CIRCLE, AT WEST CORNER OF CENTRAL PARK, AT INTERSECTION OF CENTRAL PARK WEST (8TH AVENUE) - CENTRAL PARK SOUTH (59TH STREET) AND BROADWAY, 38 FEET SOUTHEAST OF SOUTHEAST CURB OF CENTRAL PARK WEST, 71 1/2 FEET NORTH OF NORTH CURB OF DRIVE LEADING EAST INTO CENTRAL PARK, 1.8 FEET SOUTHEAST OF SOUTHEAST FACE OF A LARGE SQUARE STONE MASONRY PILLAR AND IN THE TOP OF PINK STONE WALL AND ABOUT 4 FEET ABOVE SIDE WALK.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
