Von Frankfurt FRA ging es über Hamburg HAM nach New Jersey EWR.
Mit dem NJ Transit dann nach Manhattan und dort mit der Metro, dem Grayline Hop on-Hop off-Bus oder zu Fuß weiter.
Allabendlich ging es nach Long Island ins Hotel.
Es waren unglaubliche Eindrücke, bleibende und prägende Erinnerungen. ?
Wo dann auch ein Cache in der Nähe oder auf dem Weg dorthin liegt, wurde dieser dann auch absolviert. ?

Was out walking around the city today and decided to hunt down some benchmarks and geocaches. This benchmark is right by the pond and appears to be in decent shape, but is a bit worn probably because this rock outcrop is a very popular spot to pass the day. The writing is still very legible despite the wear. See attached photo.

Spotted this benchmark unintentionally with my girlfriend SaraKat. We walked here to enjoy the duck pond at sunset. Approaching the boulder I said, "Hey, this looks like a great spot to sit" followed by, "Whoa, a benchmark!" I got to explain benchmarking a little bit and we both took full advantage of a beautiful evening overlooking the pond. This one is in perfect shape; likely the most clarity I've ever seen in a benchmark. Thanks!

My first ever "proper" benchmark!
What a fantastic spot into the bargain. Is it true this rock was planted here when Central Park was being constructed?

What a difference seasons can make. I looked for this one in mid-December just after a snowfall and was unable to find it. I kicked at the snow on the rock where I thought the mark would be but it had been walked on so much it was frozen.
Returning on a beautiful April day, I could see the mark as I approached the rock. I could also see the bum sleeping on top of the rock in the sun. I think I stirred him by my approach because he got up and walked away as I finished taking my pics.

Found this benchmark on the way to lunch in the park. Benchmark is easy to spot and in good condition. TIP: Use GPS coordinates to get in to the vicinity, then go by the log description. The description is a little hectic, but a much better source.

Found this quite by accident one afternoon while strolling by on my way to someplace else. Spotted it from a distance and knew immeadiately what it was - my first benchmark! And I wasn't even looking for it! Had my camera too, so I'll add pix as soon as I can download them.

This was an easy find, as both the coordinates and the description were accurate. The mark is located on a rock outcropping near the pond in Central Park. There are no adventures connected with this one, other than some quick battery changing so that I could take the photos.

AT NEW YORK, IN BOROUGH OF MANHATTAN, NEAR THE SOUTH CORNER OF CENTRAL PARK, ABOUT 40 YARDS NORTHEAST OF NORTHEAST CURB OF CENTRAL PARK SOUTH (WEST 59TH STREET), ABOUT 125 YARDS NORTHWEST OF NORTHWEST CURB OF 5TH AVENUE, IN THE TOP OF LOWER SOUTH PART OF A NATURAL OUTCROP OF ROCK, 12 FEET EAST OF NORTHEAST END OF AN IRON RAIL SEPARATING WALK FROM THE POND, 20 1/2 FEET NORTH-NORTHWEST AND ACROSS WALK FROM AN IRON LAMP POST AND ABOUT 1 1/2 FEET ABOVE LEVEL OF WALK.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
