The mark is 141 feet Southwest of a gravel driveway leading to a private residence, 42.0 feet Southeast of the centerline of the trail, 1.4 feet above grade and 5.0 feet lower than the trail surface.
Handheld GPS coordinates are N40 47 27.5 W074 46 18.2

Found it.®

Holograph's coordinates are good! We looked off the side of the trail and spotted the disk and boulder.

We tried to find this benchmark in the spring and decided to come back another time. Brought the dog for this try missed it again but my wife saw it on the way out!

I didn't have much hope of finding this one, since the description was pretty imprecise. However, the private crossing and house are still there, when when you are on the trail you can just see the boulder and mark below you. There are several large hickory trees near it, which are probably the trees mentioned in the description. In fact, that's how I found the boulder, by looking around for boulders near the trees.

The Central Railroad is now the Morris County Columbia hiking/biking trail and Columbia Gas pipeline.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
