I'm glad I found this before reading the log entries and viewing the pictures. I have railfanned this location several times in the past, and didn't realize this marker was there, or at least what it was. The included GPS coordinates were taken standing directly on top of the marker. Enjoy!

The Bern Rd underpass has been blocked and filled in, but the wall remains and the mark is on the center of it. The shot I took was a "grab" because I felt very vulnerable. The tracks were very close to the edge and there was a corner to the east that prevented seeing any trains coming quickly.

You can see why I was nervous. Behind me was a blind curve that would have given me only seconds to run if a train had come. And the only direction to run was back towards the train!

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1966 2.2 MI W FROM READING. ABOUT 2.2 MILES WEST ALONG THE READING COMPANY RAILROAD FROM THE NORTH STATION AT READING, ABOUT 0.2 MILE EAST OF WYOMISSING JUNCTION, 7 FEET SOUTH OF THE SOUTH RAIL OF THE SOUTH SET OF TRACKS, SET IN THE TOP OF THE 10TH STONE WEST OF THE EAST END OF A STONE RETAINING WALL, DIRECTLY OVER THE TOP OF THE SOUTH END OF THE EAST ABUTMENT OF THE BERN ROAD UNDERPASS, ABOUT LEVEL WITH THE TRACK.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
