HAHAMICE is partly correct--it is indeed a different water tank and therefore is not as described, but the exact location IS important in an intersection station. These tall structures were used to turn angles from one tri-station to another and it is vitally important that they are precisely located. Even if the new tank was put back exactly where the old one was this would be useless as one could never be sure that the center lined up precisely.

Actually gang, the benchmark as described in the original description is gone. The original tank was a straight cylinder that stood near the smaller tank at the bottom of the hill. It was torn down when the big "golf-tee" looking thing we're all familiar with was constructed further up the hill (70's or early 80's).
I'm afraid the recovery reported in 1999 also confused one of the two existing towers with the original. Neither adequately matches the dimentions described in 1942.
As an intersection benchmark, it's not worth fussing over. Even though the new tower is further up the hill, when viewed from a distance, the difference would be negligible.

Nice and easy to find, declined to climb the tower to find the actual spot. Drive by this one daily

This is a very prominent landmark in Wyomissing Hills. The water tank can be seen for many miles in all directions. Impossible to actually see the BM as the tank is behind a locked fence and the BM is on the top of the tank.

Documented History (by the NGS)

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1942 (PLB) THIS INTERSECTION STATION IS THE STANDPIPE OF THE WYOMISSING HILLS WATER COMPANY LOCATED BETWEEN GRANDVIEW BOULEVARD AND WYOMISSING HILLS BOULEVARD, AND 1/2 BLOCK N OF CORNER OF TELFORD AVENUE AND WYOMISSING HILLS BOULEVARD, IN THE BORO OF WYOMISSING HILLS. IT IS 136 FEET HIGH, PAINTED BLACK AND 20 FEET IN DIAMETER. POINT OBSERVED UPON, APEX OF ROOF.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in July 1986.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
