DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1935 (JB) STATION IS LOCATED ON THE TOP OF SNAKE HILL NEAR THE S CITY LIMITS OF ROCKAWAY, N.J., ON THE ESTATE OF E.K. JONES, ABOUT 0.5 MILE ALONG HILLSIDE AVENUE FROM ROUTE 6, 2 PACES N OF TWIN STUMPS, 4 PACES ENE OF 16-INCH OAK WITH ATTACHED STUMP, 6 PACES W OF THE WOOD ROAD (HILLSIDE AVENUE) AND ABOUT 90 FEET N OF THE N EDGE OF CULTIVATED LAND ON THE S SIDE OF THE HILL. SURFACE AND UNDERGROUND MARKS ARE STANDARD BRONZE DISKS SET IN CONCRETE AS DESCRIBED IN NOTES 1A AND 7A. REFERENCE MARK NO.1 IS 9 PACES SW OF A 12-INCH OAK AND 2 PACES E OF THE CENTER LINE OF WOOD ROAD. THE STANDARD BRONZE DISK IS SET IN A LARGE BOULDER FLUSH WITH THE SURFACE OF THE BOULDER. REFERENCE MARK NO.2 IS A STANDARD BRONZE DISK SET IN AN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK FLUSH WITH THE SURFACE OF THE ROCK. NO AZIMUTH MARK WAS SET AT THIS STATION, BUT THE SPIRE ON A WHITE CHURCH IN ROCKAWAY IS VISIBLE FROM THE GROUND WITH A LITTLE CLEARING. STATION SURVEY MONUMENT NO.2311 IS ABOUT 0.5 MILE NW OF THE STATION, 7 PACES NNW OF THE CENTER LINE OF ROUTE 6, 2 PACES ENE OF POLE NO. RYB 573 AND 50 FEET W OF A GASOLINE STATION. THE MARK IS A STATE SURVEY DISK SET IN THE TOP OF AN 8-INCH CYLINDER OF CONCRETE SET FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. TO REACH THE STATION START AT THE INTERSECTION OF HILLSIDE AVENUE AND ROUTE 6. THIS INTERSECTION IS WHERE A POWER LINE CROSSES ROUTE 6 AND IS NEAR ART DANIELS TAXIDERMIST SHOP. DRIVE UP HILLSIDE AVENUE AND ITS EXTENSION FOLLOWING THE POWER LINE FOR ABOUT 0.5 MILE TO THE TOP OF THE HILL AND THE STATION ON THE RIGHT. A 64-FOOT TOWER WILL CLEAR ALL LINES OBSERVED FROM THIS STATION.

RECOVERY NOTE BY NEW JERSEY GEODETIC SURVEY 1991 THE STATION IS LOCATED NEAR THE SOUTH EDGE OF THE BOROUGH OF ROCKAWAY IN MORRIS COUNTY ON THE TOP OF A HILL KNOWN AS SNAKE HILL. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE END OF THE EXIT RAMP FROM INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 80 EASTBOUND ONTO U.S. HIGHWAY 46 EASTBOUND IN THE TOWN OF DENVILLE, GO WEST ON U.S. HIGHWAY 46 FOR 0.75 MI (1.21 KM) TO HILLSIDE AVENUE ON THE LEFT. TURN LEFT ON HILLSIDE AVENUE AND GO 0.25 MI (0.40 KM) TO A CUL DE SAC AT THE END OF THE ROAD. FROM THE END OF THE CUL DE SAC, GO UPHILL FOR 0.05 MI (0.08 KM) ON A PAVED ROAD LEADING TO AN APARTMENT COMPLEX PARKING LOT AND THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL. PACK UPHILL ON A DIRT TRAIL IN A SOUTHWESTERLY DIRECTION FOR 0.5 MI (0.8 KM) TO THE TOP OF THE HILL AND A WATER COMPANY STANDPIPE AT THE EDGE OF A CLEARING AND THE STATION, JUST SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE CHAIN LINK FENCE SURROUNDING THE STANDPIPE. THE STATION IS 10.4 M (34.1 FT) WEST FROM THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE FENCE SURROUNDING THE STANDPIPE, 16.8 M (55.1 FT) SOUTH FROM THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE FENCE SURROUNDING THE STANDPIPE AND 3.0 M (9.8 FT) NORTHWEST FROM THE TRAIL LEADING DOWN THE HILL. THE STATION, STAMPED SNAKE 1935, IS SET IN THE TOP OF A SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT PROJECTS 0.3 M (1.0 FT) ABOVE THE GROUND. THE REFERENCE MARKS WERE NOT SEARCHED FOR.
