This was the second benchmark I've found when I wasn't looking for a benchmark but walked right past it. Unfortunately, when I got home and looked it up and found that it wasn't relisted (??) correctly after it was moved about 650 feet....

photoKW1133 RESET

Stopped by once before to look for the 'reset' mark, but w/out any paperwork & only a vague memory of mloser's description of it being 'on the steps'. I re-read the description before visiting this time & walked the perimeter of the reservoir & found the steps on the 'far' side - covered almost completely by vines (no wonder I didn't notice the steps before). After 'bushwacking' the vines, I uncovered the disk on the SE side of the top step - near the edge of the railing.

Note - this disk is a vertical control mark & the original mark was used for horizontal control...if only they would've built the building 100' or so to the west, they wouldn't've had to destroy it!

from the area of the steps looking back toward Civil War Museum

The National Civil War Museum was built on this site in 2000 and the mark would be in a driveway. I confirmed with the project manager that the station was reset and that permission from the NGS was received, but the reset mark was never put in the NGS database. It is marked Harrisburg Reset 1999 and is on a set of stairs at the end of the reservoir opposite the new building. Both reference marks are gone too--they would have been where the parking lot now is.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in July 1986.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
