The BM may be easiest to locate by its position relative to the initials TCJ carved a short distance to the SW of the BM. The initials are more obvious than the carved BM No 9 carving at the BM.

White arrow points down to chiseled square, partially obscured by leaves.

Recovered in good condition near the S end of the Clarks Ferry Bridge...after looking both ways along the tracks.

photo9 PRR (KW1860) chiseled square - Dauphin Co., PA

I was so nervous about having to cross the railroad that I actually measured the 356 feet from the end of this wall. Once I finished the measuring and looked across the tracks, the large painted arrow was very obvious. I walked across the tracks and grabbed a couple pics. Grabbing a chiseled square was worth the trespass--I am sure this dates from the late 1800s!

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
