What a find this one was! Started out easy enough - since the crossing to the west is well traveled and crosses at an open field, I decided to come in from the east. I parked at N40°07.301 W077°12.040 (a cul-de-sac in a development about 1/2 mi. ESE) and headed west. Found the culvert easy enough...but...the railroad bed has been raised by about 4 feet, with stacked railroad ties holding back the added ballast. All isn't lost as there is about 18" of the original headwall exposed...but covered in dirt and stones. So I'm standing there on the west side with no way to get to it (no railing to hold on to)...but to my right is a broken 10 foot branch, so I brace myself on the west abutment and start using the branch to push back & forth, working the dirt & stones off the ledge. After about 15 min. I finally hit it...and in another 10 min, I actually worked enough dirt off to read the disk! I'm sure glad it wasn't a full sized overpass - I would've never reached it!

Oh, almost forgot - Recovered in good condition...

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
