...was back in the area again & thought I'd give this one another try...so I headed in expecting to devote a half hour or so...and there it was freshly dug out thanks to mloser's sleuthing skills! ..well, with time saved - I headed out to look for more!

I have located enough marks on rock outcrops beside railroad tracks that I thought I would get this one quickly, but I wasn't quite right. The most likely outcrop wasn't the one with the mark. But there were quite a few possibilities so I ran the metal detector along the most obvious ones, and managed to hit it pretty quickly. It was under about 2 inches of dirt and growth, but was easily uncovered.

This is Emmark's pic with the mark's location in a box.

The GPS put me just northeast of the steps - I did some probing and swept the area w/ a metal detector to no avail. there is quite a bit of dumped brush & rubble in the area - I'm afraid the disk may be covered. I looked from about 30' SW of the steps to 150' NE.... might have to try again..

I applaud catfishcrusader for finding this. I roamed around this former railroad right-of-way looking to no avail. There are no tracks or mileposts anymore, and lots of rock potential outcrops in the underbrush. Scaled coordinates indicate the location is probably somewhere around the metal steps leading up to the Shippensburg University campus at the east end of Dauphin Drive (alternatively, the west end of Queen Street off campus).

This is the abandon RR right of way along which the station disk X 3 could not be found.

Finding this benchmark required some luck and the use of a metal detector. Probably my most rewarding benchmark to date.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
