In pretty good shape. The nearby retaining wall along the tracks is dated 1917. I suspect that is when this BM was set, so it has been here for 100 years.

1917 is circled in red. Bench mark location circled in yellow.

Found this benchmark on a nice March day. Beware of traffic. It took us about 10 minutes to cross the road. This appears to be one of the oldest benchmarks that we have seen. I wonder if it was damaged in the flood a few years back.

This was a nice easy and fast find. Still working on learning my gps so this was very helpful. Though while I was standing on top of the marker it still said I was 120 ft away. Not sure if it was my gps or the way points that are off.

This is cool, will definately keep this up.

Our first, and many to come!

Third benchmark found.

The mark is in good condition at N 40° 46.127 W 080° 03.846.

Found rather quickly, but man was it a cruddy disk. After cleaning it up, the numbers still can't be read very well as the previous finder stated.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
