Found again while checking a nearby cache of mine. love to walk this entire abandoned track from Le Roy to as close to Bloomington as it gets. Previous logger put in cords so I won't be redundant.

Found this benchmark amidst a tangle of thorns. It was an awesome walk along a unused railway above the river. Took a little time to get close enough to get a decent picture of the benchmark. Actually found the BM at these coordinates: N40 23.977 W88 52.976 instead of posted ones.

Ok.. so it was about 0 degrees, and we had just gotten a fresh brushing of snow on top of previous days' snow, so I figured I was up for a challenge... Yes, definately some thick underbrush. Quite thorny.. It would have been way too painful had I not had multiple layers of clothing on!! After digging through the snow, I found it, but couldn't read it because it was covered with rugged ice. After all, it was only 0 degrees with windchills in the negatives! Talk about fun..

Found near top of no longer used neat stone railroad bridge over the Kickapoo Creek which I think I saw on the side was built in 1910. Would be really difficult to get to in summer because of the heavy undergrowth. .

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991. WARNING-Repeat measurements at this control monument indicate possible vertical movement.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
