Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1839 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1839 (EB) STATION IS ON TEFFTS HILL, ABOUT 1-3/8 MILES SW OF KINGSTON. THE STATION IS MARKED BY A BURIED STONE CONE.
01/01/1934 by RIGS (MARK NOT FOUND)
RECOVERY NOTE BY RHODE ISLAND GEODETIC SURVEY 1934 DID NOT LOCATE THE STATION. TEFFT HILL IS THE NAME GIVEN TO THE HIGHEST LAND OF THE TEFFT FARM, NOW OWNED BY L.F. BURROUGHS AND USED BY HIM AS A SUMMER ESTATE. AN OLD-TIMER TOLD ME THAT HE REMEMBERS SURVEYORS USING A TOWER IN THE PASTURE S OF THE HOUSE. HE WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE THE SPOT DEFINITELY WITHIN A HUNDRED YARDS. NEITHER IS THERE ANY WAY OF TELLING THAT THE SURVEYORS, WHOM HE REMEMBERS, USED THE SAME POINT AS WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1839.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in August 1998.
  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
