Found while hiking the ridge.

Found while caching.

Found this benchmark 50 feet from the trail. Also saw another reference benchmark on the trail...on the way towards "Lonesome Baldy".

We found the benchmark disk and the three reference mark disks. It is very nice that they are all intact and in great shape. I kept an I out for snakes up on those rocks on this nice sunny warm day but saw none.

Found a small batch of these up here today.

10/26/14 - Going over some old BM finds and correcting the errors. None of my pictures here are the benchmark. Changing it to a note.

Just investigating a clear side path that took me right to it.

Was taking a loop around the ridge when I noticed a benchmark underneath my feet. Then I walked a little further and found another, etc.

Found this NGS Benchmark disk and three others for a total of FOUR on Bald Hill.

Found disk marked "Bald Hill" 1938 at N41 30.115 W073 55.019.

Found disk marked "Bald Hill No. 3" (LX4439) 1852/1933.

Found disk marked "Bald Hill No. 1" 1852/1933 (arrow on No. 3 points to it and is just yards away)

Found disk marked "Bald Hill No. 2" 1852/1933 at N41 30.093 W073 55.050.

All disks have turned a nice shade of green and stand out on nice sunny days like this was. You can see all the numbered disks from each other, just look on the rocks.

Found two of the discs described by the reports. One was on Bald Hill and the other near 41 30.094 073 55.030 (near Grazing the Grass cache). Both were in good condition. One had "Bald Hill" stamped on it and the years (1852)(1952) stamped as well.

This one was simply stamped "Bald Hill" 1952.
photoSecond Bench Mark
This one is located farther to the south and had (1852) and (1952) stamped on it.

Documented History (by the NGS)

1/1/1852 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1852 (EB) THIS SIGNAL IS ON NORTHEASTERNMOST PEAK OF BREAKNECK RANGE. POINT WAS SECURED BY A HOLE 2 INCHES DEEP DRILLED IN ROCK.
1/1/1933 by CGS (SEE DESCRIPTION)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1933 (CAE) ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION OF THIS STATION DESCRIBES IT AS A DRILL HOLE 2 INCHES DEEP DRILLED IN ROCK ON NORTHEASTERNMOST PEAK OF BREAKNECK RIDGE. A LARGE DESCRIPTION OF AN ATTEMPT TO LOCATE STATION LATER ON IS OF LITTLE VALUE IN RECOVERING STATION. THIS PARTY FOUND A 2-INCH DRILL HOLE 6 INCHES DEEP AND SIX 1-INCH DRILL HOLES SURROUNDING IT. ONE OF THESE DRILL HOLES HAS AN ARROW FROM IT POINTING ALMOST AT 2-INCH HOLE WITH 58 CUT IN ROCK OVER IT AND IS 57.78 FEET FROM 2-INCH DRILL HOLE, SO THIS WAS THOUGHT TO BE STATION AND A 20-FOOT TOWER WAS CONSTRUCTED OVER IT. POSITION COMPUTATION OF THIS STATION SHOWED A DISCREPANCY OF 3 METERS FROM OLD STATION AND WITH THIS INFORMATION AND DIRECTION, A FURTHER SEARCH FOR OLD STATION WAS MADE AND A DRILL HOLE 3 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND ABOUT 8 INCHES DEEP WAS FOUND IN ROCK IN A DEPRESSION SO THAT IT WAS COVERED OVER BY ABOUT 3 INCHES OF DIRT. IT IS 3.488 METERS FROM HOLE FIRST SELECTED AS STATION AND IS BELIEVED TO BE ORIGINAL STATION. IT WAS REMARKED BY A STANDARD DISK AND 3 STANDARD DISK REFERENCE MARKS. IT IS NOT KNOWN WHO MADE DRILL HOLES MENTIONED ABOVE AND NO DISTANCES WERE AVAILABLE TO VERIFY STATION. IT HAPPENS BOTH HOLES SELECTED FOR STATION ARE APPROXIMATELY 58 FEET FROM DRILL HOLE WITH ARROW AND 58, AND ARROW MAY BE POINTING TO EITHER ONE OF THEM. DESCRIPTION OF SEARCH FOR STATION MENTIONED ABOVE STATES THAT MR. BLUNT ALWAYS USED 3- AND 1-INCH DRILLS IN MARKING STATIONS. THIS IS BELIEVED TO BE ORIGINAL STATION ESTABLISHED BY E. BLUNT IN 1852. IT IS ON NORTHEASTERNMOST RIDGE OF BREAKNECK MT. ON A HILL SHOWN ON CHART AS BALD HILL (ALSO KNOWN LOCALLY AS DINGY MT.). TO REACH STATION FROM CITY OF BEACON FROM INTERSECTION OF E. MAIN ST. AND ADDAN ST. PROCEED ALONG E. MAIN ST. TO NE A DISTANCE OF 1/2 MILE AND THEN CONTINUE ALONG A MOUNTAIN ROAD TO BASE OF HILL AND UP A HOLLOW ALONG A MOUNTAIN STREAM. ROAD SOON PLAYS OUT BUT CONTINUE UP THIS HOLLOW TO TOP OF RIDGE AND FOLLOW TOP OF THIS RIDGE TO N UNTIL IT BEGINS TO DROP OFF RAPIDLY. STATION IS ON HIGHEST PART OF THIS SHOULDER. IT IS ON BARE ROCK WITH STATION IN A DEPRESSION IN ROCK SO THAT IT WAS COVERED OVER WITH ABOUT 2 INCHES OF DIRT. IT WAS MARKED BY A 3-INCH DRILL HOLE ABOUT 8 INCHES DEEP. THIS WAS FILLED WITH CEMENT WITH A STANDARD DISK STAMPED BALD HILL 1852-1933 CEMENTED IN TOP. A TRIANGULAR WALL OF LOOSE BRICK WAS LAID AROUND STATION AND THREE STANDARD DISK REFERENCE MARKS WERE SET IN BARE ROCKS NEAR STATION. THIS PARTY WAS FURNISHED WITH A PHOTOSTAT OF ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION OF THIS STATION BY E. BLUNT IN 1852 WHICH STATES THAT STATION IS ON NORTHEASTERNMOST PEAK OF BREAKNECK RANGE, AND IS SECURED BY A HOLE 2 INCHES DEEP DRILLED IN ROCK. A PHOTOSTATE OF A DESCRIPTION OF AN ATTEMPT TO LOCATE STATION AT A LATER DATE WAS ALSO FURNISHED, BUT THIS CONTAINED BUT LITTLE INFORMATION OF VALUE IN RECOVERING STATION. UPON SEARCHING FOR THIS STATION, A 2-INCH DRILL HOLE ABOUT 6 INCHES DEEP WAS FOUND. ANOTHER ONE-INCH DRILL HOLE WITH ARROW CUT IN ROCK, POINTING ALMOST TO 2-INCH DRILL HOLE AND WITH A 58 CUT IN ROCK, WAS FOUND 57.78 FEET FROM 2-INCH DRILL HOLE. OTHER 1-INCH DRILL HOLES WERE FOUND. IT WAS THEREFORE ASSUMED THAT THIS 2-INCH DRILL HOLE WAS ORIGINAL STATION AND THAT RECORDS FOR WITNESS MARKS HAD BEEN LOST. TWO-INCH HOLE WAS FILLED WITH CEMENT AND A STANDARD DISK WAS SET IN TOP OF IT AND A SIGNAL STAND 20 FEET TALL ERECTED OVER IT. THIS STATION WAS OCCUPIED AND OBSERVED UPON AND COMPUTATION OF SCHEME CARRIED ON TO VICINITY OF KINGSTON, NEW YORK, WHERE A CHECK WAS MADE ON AN OLD RECOVERED LINE OF TRIANGULATION. POSITION COMPUTATION OF THIS STATION DIFFERED FROM OLD POSITION OF THIS STATION BY 2.95 METERS WHICH SHOWED RECOVERY OF STATION TO BE DOUBTFUL. WITH THIS INFORMATION A PARTY REVISITED STATION AND BY REMOVING A 3-INCH LAYER OF EARTH FROM ROCK SUCCEEDED IN FINDING A 3-INCH DRILL HOLE ABOUT EIGHT INCHES DEEP. THIS 3-INCH HOLE IS 3.488 METERS FROM DRILL HOLE PREVIOUSLY SELECTED AS STATION. AN ECCENTRIC REDUCTION WAS MADE AND POSITION OF THIS POINT COMPUTED FROM OLD LINE TOMPKINS-CROWS NEST IN ORDER TO VERIFY THIS AS ORIGINAL BALD HILL. TRIANGLE BALD HILL, TOMPKINS, AND CROWS NEST HAS A 6-INCH CLOSURE. THIS STATION IS 57.94 FEET FROM WITNESS MARK WITH ARROW AND 58, AND ARROW COULD POINT TO THIS STATION AS WELL AS TO OTHER ONE. UNFORTUNATELY THIS RECOVERY WAS NOT MADE UNTIL NEAR CLOSE OF SEASON AND COMPUTATIONS OF TRIANGULATION HAD BEEN COMPLETE AS FAR AS KINGSTON, NEW YORK. NAME OF STATION WAS CHANGED IN ALL RECORDS AND COMPUTATIONS TO BALD HILL ECC. AND THUS NAMED AS A NEW STATION. STANDARD DISK STATION MARK PREVIOUSLY SET IN DRILL HOLE WAS REMOVED, LEAVING A 3/4-INCH HOLE IN ROCK. A NEW DISK STAMPED BALD HILL 1852-1933 WAS CEMENTED IN THREE-INCH DRILL HOLE AND THREE STANDARD DISK REFERENCE MARKS WERE CEMENTED IN DRILL HOLES IN NEARBY ROCKS WITH ARROWS POINTING TOWARDS 3-INCH STATION.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1938 (CDM) STATION IS ON NORTHEASTERLY RIDGE OF BREAKNECK MT. LOCALLY KNOWN AS DINGY MT. MARK IS SET IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK AND IS STAMPED BALD HILL 1852 1933. REFERENCE MARK NO.2 IS S OF STATION AND IS SET IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK STAMPED BALD HILL 1852 1933. REFERENCE MARK NO.1 IS E OF STATION SET IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK AND IS STAMPED BALD HILL 1852 1933. A NEW AZIMUTH MARK WAS SET 150 FEET N OF STATION, IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK, ON NORTHERNMOST POINT OF RIDGE. OLD AZIMUTH WAS NOT VISIBLE DUE TO HEAVY GROWTH OF BRUSH AND TIMBER AROUND STATION. TO REACH STATION FROM INTERSECTION OF ANNAN AND E. MAIN STS. IN CITY OF BEACON, NEW YORK, GO NORTHEASTERLY ALONG MAIN ST. 0.5 MILE TO A Y. BEAR R ON PRIVATE ROAD AND GO 0.15 MILE TO ANOTHER Y. KEEP STRAIGHT AHEAD (L FORK) AND GO 0.15 MILE TO A SMALL STREAM, CROSS STREAM AND CONTINUE ABOUT 100 YARDS TO A GATE, PASS THROUGH GATE AND CONTINUE ABOUT 0.2 MILE TO A SMALL OPENING IN WOODS. LEAVE TRUCK HERE AND CONTINUE ON FOOT UP DIM ROAD TO ANOTHER GATE, PASS THROUGH GATE AND CONTINUE UP ROAD TO A SMALL MOUNTAIN STREAM. BEAR R ALONG R SIDE OF STREAM AND CONTINUE UPHILL TO WHERE TRAIL ONCE CROSSES STREAM (REMAINS OF OLD BRIDGE ABUTMENTS ARE STILL VISIBLE). BEAR R ON R SIDE OF STREAM AND CONTINUE UPHILL TO JUNCTION OF TWO SMALL STREAMS. CROSS RIGHT-HAND STREAM AND CONTINUE UPHILL ON RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF LEFT-HAND STREAM TO TOP OF SADDLE OR RIDGE. CROSS STREAM HERE AND BEAR L FOLLOWING ALONG BACKBONE OF RIDGE, CROSSING TWO SLIGHT HILLS, TO LAST AND HIGHEST HILL AND STATION. MEASUREMENTS CHECK AS OF OLD DESCRIPTION.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1952 (SS) I MADE A CAREFUL STUDY OF THE AREA FOR THE STATION MARK WHICH WAS NOT FOUND. ON ONE OF THE ROCK OUTCROPS I DID DISCOVER A HOLE FOR A DISK. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THE STATION MARK HAS BEEN REMOVED. THE THREE REFERENCE MARKS (*) STAMPED BALD HILL 1852 1933 RESPECTIVELY, WERE FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 HAD THE CEMENT REMOVED AND HAD BEEN DISFIGURED BY HAMMER BLOWS, BUT THE DISK HELD SECURELY. REFERENCE MARK 3 SHOWED SIGNS THAT SOME PERSON ATTEMPTED REMOVAL OF THE DISK. (*) STANDARD MONEL METAL DISKS.
