Stumbled upon while geocaching along the Airline Trail. Saw the standing sign of a nearby benchmark and located it a few feet away. My 1st logged Benchmark find. MrMiggle

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1942 (KBJ) STATION IS LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 3.5 MILES N OF COLCHESTER, 0.15 MILE SW OF THE AMSTON DEPOT AND AT THE JUNCTION OF THE SPUR LINE TO COLCHESTER AND THE MAIN LINE OF THE NEW YORK, NEW HAVEN AND HARTFORD RAILROAD. ON LAND OWNED BY MR. C.F. BAILEY, 70 FEET W OF THE W RAIL OF THE MAIN LINE, 8 FEET NE OF THE REFERENCE POST. THE DISK IS STAMPED COLCHESTER NORTH BASE 1942. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS 126.35 FEET NE OF THE STATION, 28 FEET W OF THE W RAIL OF THE COLCHESTER SPUR LINE, 24 FEET E OF THE E RAIL OF THE MAIN LINE. THE DISK IS STAMPED COLCHESTER NORTH BASE NO. 1, 1942. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS 149.31 FEET S OF THE STATION, 25 FEET E OF THE E RAIL OF THE MAIN LINE, 34 FEET SW OF A TRIANGLE BLAZED HIGH LINE POLE. THE DISK IS STAMPED COLCHESTER NORTH BASE NO. 2, 1942. AZIMUTH MARK IS APPROXIMATELY 0.5 MILE S OF THE STATION, 23.3 FEET N OF A RAILROAD CROSSING SIGN, 22.6 FEET W OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE HIGHWAY, 16.3 FEET E OF THE E RAIL OF THE COLCHESTER SPUR LINE TRACK AND 4.2 FEET NNE OF THE REFERENCE POST. THE DISK IS STAMPED COLCHESTER NORTH BASE 1942. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF HIGHWAYS 2 AND 85 IN COLCHESTER, BY GOING N AND W ON NOS. 2 AND 85 FOR 0.35 MILE, THENCE RIGHT ON HIGHWAY 85 FOR 3.0 MILES TO A RAILROAD CROSSING AND THE AZIMUTH MARK ON THE LEFT OF THE HIGHWAY JUST AFTER CROSSING THE TRACKS AS DESCRIBED. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD ON HIGHWAY FOR 0.85 MILE TO A RAILROAD CROSSING, TURN SHARP LEFT ALONG LEFT SIDE OF THE TRACKS FOR 0.15 MILE TO THE AMSTON DEPOT, CONTINUE AROUND DEPOT AND ALONG THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRACKS FOR 0.1 MILE TO THE JUNCTION OF THE SPUR LINE TO THE MAIN LINE, CROSS THE TRACKS AND FOLLOW ALONG THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TRACKS FOR 0.1 MILE TO THE STATION ON THE RIGHT AS DESCRIBED. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK 33 METERS.

RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1971 (LFS) STATION MONUMENT WAS FOUND BROKEN OFF AND THE DISK GONE. BOTH REFERENCE MARKS WERE FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. AZIMUTH MARK WAS NOT FOUND, ALTHOUGH A SEARCH WAS MADE ON THE PUBLISHED DISTANCES. THIS POINT FALLS ON A GRAVEL AND CINDER ROAD SHOULDER. THE LINE FROM STATION TO AZIMUTH MARK IS BLOCKED. STATION MONUMENT WAS REMOVED AND UNDERGROUND MARK RECOVERED. A NEW SURFACE MARK WAS THEN SET, PLUMBED OVER THE UNDERGROUND. ANGLE BETWEEN REFERENCE MARKS CHECKED CLOSELY, BUT DIFFERENCES WERE NOTED IN DISTANCES. THE 1971 DISTANCE TO RM NO. 1 IS 0.087 METER SHORTER THAN 1942, AND THE 1971 DISTANCE TO RM NO. 2 IS 0.028 METER SHORTER THAN 1942. STATION IS LOCATED IN TIMBER ALONG NORTHWEST SIDE OF ABANDONED RAILROAD GRADE, ABOUT 200 YARDS SOUTHWEST OF THE OLD AMSTON DEPOT, AND NEAR A RAILROAD GRADE FORK. TO REACH STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF STATE HIGHWAYS 16 AND 85 IN COLCHESTER, GO WEST AND NORTH ON HIGHWAY 85 FOR 3.3 MILES TO CROSSING OF OLD RAILROAD GRADE. CONTINUE FOR 0.8 MILE TO TEXACO STATION ON RIGHT. TURN SHARP LEFT AND GO SOUTHERLY ON TRACK ROAD FOR 0.1 MILE TO OLD DEPOT. CONTINUE FOR 0.15 MILE TO JOG. CROSS RAILROAD GRADE AND CONTINUE FOR 0.05 MILE TO STATION ON RIGHT. STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED COLCHESTER NORTH BASE 1942 1971, SET IN THE TOP OF A 14-INCH-DIAMETER, CONCRETE PROJECTING 2 INCHES. IT IS 74.5 FEET NORTHWEST OF CENTER LINE OF ROAD, 28.0 FEET NORTHWEST OF WOVEN WIRE FENCE, 60 FEET NORHTEAST OF STONE FENCE, AND 3.5 FEET SOUTHEAST OF A METAL WITNESS POST. UNDERGROUND MARK IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED COLCHESTER NORTH BASE 1942, SET IN CONCRETE 3 FEET BELOW GROUND. RM NO. 1 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED COLCHESTER NORTH BASE NO 1 1942, SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH-SQUARE, CONCRETE MONUMENT FLUSH WITH GROUND, ON SLIGHT HIGH GROUND INSIDE FORK OF RAILROAD GRADES, 40 YARDS SOUTH OF JOG IN TRACK ROAD, 18.5 FEET SOUTHEAST OF CENTER LINE OF TRACK ROAD AND 4.55 FEET HIGHER THAN STATION MARK. REFERENCE MARK NUMBER TWO IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED COLCHESTER NORTH BASE NO 2 1942, SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH-SQUARE, CONCRETE MONUMENT PROJECTING 4 INCHES. 24.7 FEET SOUTHEAST OF CENTER LINE OF ROAD, 55 YARDS SOUTHWEST OF A FORK WHERE A TRACK ROAD RUNS DOWN BETWEEN THE 2 RAILROAD GRADES. IT IS 1.4 FEET HIGHER THAN STATION MARK. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN 3-1/2 MILES NORTH OF COLCHESTER.
