01/01/1910 by CGS (SEE DESCRIPTION)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1910 (HPR) ON A WELL KNOWN CLEARED HILL IN THAT PART OF FAIR HAVEN RECENTLY (1882) ANNEXED, AND NOW WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS OF NEW HAVEN, ON LAND BELONGING TO THE WOODWARD HEIRS, WHO LIVE 200 YARDS FROM THE CORNERS. THE STATION IS WITHIN SIGHT OF AND ABOUT 1/4 MILE E FROM THE ANNEX HOTEL, A WATERING PLACE FOR HORSES AND A BARROOM AT THE CORNERS. THE STATION IS NEAR THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAVERSE AT THE SW END OF THE SMALL ELLIPTICAL EARTHWORK CALLED FORT WOOSTER, A FORTIFICATION USED IN 1812, AND NOW A RUIN. STATION WAS MARKED BY A SODA WATER BOTTLE FILLED WITH ASHES AND PLACED BOTTOM UP ABOUT 2 FEET BELOW SURFACE. SURFACE MARK IS OF FREESTONE, ABOUT 18 BY 6 INCHES BY 6 INCHES, DRESSED FOR 3 INCHES TO A 4-INCH SQUARE, WITH CROSS LINES AND DRILL HOLE IN CENTER AND THE LETTERS U.S.C.S. IN TOP. DRILL HOLE MARKS STATION. IN 1903, J.B. BAYLOR REPORTED THAT THE SURFACE MARK HAD DISAPPEARED. A NEW SURFACE MARK WAS PLACED CONSISTING OF A BLOCK OF DRESSED GRANITE 18 INCHES SQUARE AND 8 INCHES THICK, WITH SMALL DRILL HOLE AND TRIANGLE AND LETTERS U.S.C.S. CUT IN ITS TOP FACE. THIS WAS CENTERED OVER THE SODA WATER BOTTLE. TOP OF STONE IS ABOUT FLUSH WITH SURFACE OF GROUND. THE FORT IS NOW IN THE CITY PARK SYSTEM. IN 1903 A TRIPOD SIGNAL STOOD OVER THE STATION. THE FOLLOWING REFERENCES WERE OBSERVED--CENTER OF LARGE FLAGPOLE, DISTANT 7.1 FEET, 36 DEG 20 MIN RIGHT OF SW LEDGE LIGHTHOUSE. CENTER OF ARCH OF OLD MAGAZINE OF FORT, 53.8 FEET, 283 DEG 53 MIN RIGHT OF SW LEDGE LIGHTHOUSE. FROM STATION IT IS 10.4 FEET TO CENTER OF THE INTERIOR WALL OF THE CORNER OF THE FORT. IN 1910 H.P. RITTER REPORTED THE STATION STILL IN EXISTENCE. THE SURFACE MARK, TRIPOD, AND MAGAZINE WERE STILL IN POSITION AS DESCRIBED IN 1904. THE FLAGPOLE REFERRED TO IN 1904 WAS GONE, HAVING BEEN BLOWN DOWN IN 1909. THE STUMP OF THE FLAGPOLE, PARTLY ROTTED AWAY AND FLUSH WITH THE GROUND WAS STILL IN EVIDENCE. THE STATION IS LOCATED IN FORT WOOSTER PARK, AND IS EASILY REACHED BY TROLLEY AND VEHICLE.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in August 1998.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
