Toward six inch oak tree, and intersection with Skellinger Road

Returned a year after our first attempt. Problem was that someone had placed a 20-foot tree trunk directly over the mark (see photo). This does not appear accidental as it is precisely placed to cover the mark. The NGS description is adequate and current except that the referenced blazed oak tree is no longer standing. Sighting down the center line of Skellinger Road, 32 feet past the center of Crigger Road places you just about on the mark. Mark is is good shape. We replaced the tree trunk over the mark. . . patrick & shirley

Well, a lot has happened since 1942! And we note that the NJ Survey did not make mention of this bench mark in their 1976 survey so we wonder about that also. The oak tree with the 6-inch triangle-blazed marking is gone. This leaves us with, not a point, but a line for a reference. With over 60 years of humus accumulated to a depth of some six inches, we suspect that this mark will not be recovered. We certainly dispaired after about 30 minutes of floundering about. DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1942 8.5 MI SW FROM COLESVILLE. 4.2 MILES SOUTHWEST ALONG THE COLESVILLE TO BEEMERVILLE GRAVEL ROAD FROM THE POST OFFICE AT COLESVILLE, THENCE 1.7 MILES SOUTHWEST ALONG A NARROW GRAVEL ROAD, THENCE 0.7 MILE NORTHWEST ALONG AN OLD ABANDONED DIRT ROAD, THENCE 1.9 MILES NORTHWEST ALONG CRIGGER ROAD, IN STOKES STATE FOREST, AT A T INTERSECTION OF CRIGGER ROAD AND SKELLINGER ROAD, 32 FEET EAST OF THE CENTER LINE OF CRIGGER ROAD AT THE POINT OF INTERSECTION, AND 7 FEET NORTHEAST OF A 6-INCH TRIANGLE-BLAZED OAK TREE. A STANDARD DISK, SET IN THE TOP OF AN OUTCROPPING BOULDER.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
