REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS 67.590 METERS W BY S OF STATION, 9.2 METERS (30 FEET) W OF CENTER LINE OF ROAD AND PROJECTS 5 INCHES. AZIMUTH MARK, A STANDARD BRONZE DISK SET IN A DRILL HOLE IN THE TOP OF AN 18-INCH RETAINING WALL ON THE W SIDE OF THE W SIDEWALK OF PITTSTON AVENUE, IS 1/4 MILE NW OF THE STATION. IT IS 3 FEET S OF THE N END OF THIS WALL, 8 PACES W OF CENTER LINE OF PITTSTON AVENUE AND 89 PACES S OF INTERSECTION OF PITTSTON AVENUE AND SAUNDERS STREET. IT PROJECTS 18 INCHES. TO REACH STATION FROM PITTSTON, GO N ON U.S. HIGHWAY 11 TO JUNCTION OF HIGHWAYS 11 AND 315. TURN LEFT ON HIGHWAYS 11 AND 315 AND FOLLOW HIGHWAY 11, 5.3 MILES TO SANDERS STREET IN SCRANTON. RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1943 (BDH) THE TABLET SURFACE MARK HAD BEEN REMOVED AND THE CONCRETE BLOCK BATTERED SO AS TO VIRTUALLY OBLITERATE THE HOLE FORMED THEREIN BY THE STEM OF THE TABLET. SINCE THE BLOCK, BY BEING IN THE CENTER OF THE DEPRESSIONS LEFT BY THE FOUNDATIONS OR FOOTINGS OF THE LEGS OF THE TOWER, APPEARED TO BE IN ITS ORIGINAL LOCATION AND THE REFERENCE MARKS WERE INTACT, RAN THE TRAVERSE THROUGH REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 AND THE CENTER OF THE STATION BLOCK TO REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 FROM WHICH AN OBSERVATION WAS TAKEN ON POLARIS. WHILE THE DISTANCE, AS PUBLISHED BY THE COAST SURVEY, FROM THE STATION TO REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 AGREED WITH THE RECORD, THE DISTANCE (DOUBLE CHAINED AND VERIFIED BY STADIA) FROM REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 TO THE STATION AMOUNTS TO 253.88 FEET AS COMPARED WITH 67.590 METERS, 221.75 FEET, REPORTED BY THE COAST SURVEY. THE AZIMUTH FROM THE STATION TO EACH REFERENCE MARK CLOSELY AGREES WITH THAT RECORDED. ACCORDING TO THE NOTES, SURFACE, UNDERGROUND AND REFERENCE MARKS ARE STANDARD BRONZE DISKS SET IN CONCRETE, AS DESCRIBED IN NOTES 1A, 7A, AND 11A. HAVING IN MIND TO RECOVER THE UNDERGROUND MARK OF THE STATION, EXCAVATED THE CONCRETE BLOCK AND AFTER DIGGING DOWN TO WELL OVER SIX FEET, WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY TRACE OF AN UNDERGROUND MARK. THE SOIL IN THE LAST TWO FEET OF THE HOLE, CONSISTING OF A BLUE SHALE, APPEARED TO HAVE NEVER BEEN PREVIOUSLY DISTURBED. REPLACED AND CENTERED THE CEMENT BLOCK IN WHICH THE SURFACE MARK OF THE STATION WAS PRESUMED TO HAVE BEEN CAST. NOTE- FIELD RECORDS CHECKED, SHOW DISTANCE TO R.M. NO. 2 MEASURED IN METERS ONLY WITH NO CHECK MEASUREMENT IN FEET. THE NEW MEASUREMENT INDICATES ERROR OF 10 METERS.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1957 (CTH) STATION WAS RECOVERED IN POOR CONDITION. STATION IS MARKED BY A TACK IN LEAD IN THE DISK HOLE IN THE TOP OF THE MONUMENT. THE REFERENCE MARKS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS IN GOOD CONDITION BUT WILL NO LONGER SEE THE STATION BECAUSE OF BUILDINGS. THE STATION MARK IS 121.5 FEET NORTHWEST OF A TRIANGULAR BLAZED, 22 INCH OAK TREE, 82 FEET SOUTHWEST OF A 16 INCH OAK TREE AND 26 FEET NORTH OF THE CENTER OF A TRACK ROAD. REFERENCE MARK IS 61 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE BLAZED TREE. THE REMAINDER OF THE OLD DESCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE EXCEPT THE DIRECTIONS TO REACH THE STATION- TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE INTERSECTION OF OHARA STREET AND SOUTHWESTERN AVENUE AT CONNELL PARK IN THE SOUTH EDGE OF SCRANTON, GO SOUTHWEST ON SOUTHWESTERN AVENUE FOR 0.4 MILE TO END OF PAVEMENT AND A DIRT STREET LEFT. TURN LEFT ON DIRT STREET FOR 0.15 MILE TO A DIRT ROAD LEFT. TURN LEFT ON DIRT ROAD FOR 188 FEET TO THE MARK ON THE LEFT.
1/1/1958 by CGS (SEE DESCRIPTION)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1958 (JMR) THE STATION AND REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 WERE DESTROYED WHEN A GENERAL ELECTRIC PLANT WAS CONSTRUCTED ON THE STATION SITE. THE AZIMUTH MARK WAS RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED BUT FOUND IN POOR CONDITION. IT WAS DESTROYED AT THIS TIME.
