lemon16 and I were in the neighborhood grabbing a few caches when he alerted me that there was a nearby benchmark. He remembered the picture CoyoteTrust had posted which helped make this a quick find.

found it

N 41° 35.358 W 088° 03.462

Wahoo! The above coords are approximate; I was getting 57+ foot accuracy being up against the building where I found the mark.

The building now houses a store called "Antiques on State", and the basement part of the building houses "Carter's Place". Check by the stairwell on the NE corner of the bulding an look closely -- it's easy to miss this tiny bolt. The bolt is a bit worn so no "SD" marking was visible.

This was a good place to rest from the bike ride down here, and finding the mark is the icing on the cake! Glad to get this one off the radar.

See pics. Sorry, I don't have a 'setting' pic, but the close-up and overview should help.

THE CENTER PUNCH MARK IN THE END OF A COPPER BOLT LEADED IN THE STONE, MARKED SD.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
