On campus for a college tour for oldest kiddo. Easy to spot bench mark. A great view from here too. Sad that the cache that used to be here is archived. Tried for Geology 101 and failed. Glad we got a cache near hotel this am.

It took me much longer to find the benchmark on this website than in person!

Spotted this one on the way to do geocache "Under the Golden Dome."

Grabbed this one while searching for "Under the Golden Dome."

Fun and easy find while on vacation.

Next easy to find benchmark located near my lab.

We have noted this benchmark many times over the years. These steps are one of our favorite places to enjoy an evening picnic, people watching, or a sunset. Finance Guy pointed out the disk to the Lego Guy as we walked over to the Iowa-Indiana game.

I remember this benchmark from my school days... long before I got involved in caching. Arrived in town early for a wedding and revisited the benchmark... this time with GPS in hand.

Quick find, and a great view.

didn't even need the GPS for this one - it is right there for all to see

Cool benchmark. The marked elevation is ~40 ft off from what my GPS said (Garmin Legend CX). I think the 'Vista' has the barometric altimeter - it would be interesting to see what it says.

Found it on a beautiful day. The view from here is great!

My GPSr goes inaccurate when close to the building, but reception is terrific a few feet from the benchmark.

Nice spot to sit and calibrate my GPSr.

Didn't know this was here in all the time we have been walking by this. Cool!
The Tomboys

It is really nice to see the Ol'Cap' back open again. Too many students pass through this university without ever setting foot in this building. It's an interesting tour!

I was worried that the reconstruction of the steps in the last 2 years might have disturbed it. Someone doing work at the building told me that the steps had been removed and replaced but the stone blocks on the sides were not disturbed. I didn't know how much faith to put in that statement.

But I see the NGS themselves did a recovery in July 2005, so they were likely aware of the reconstruction work.

Old Capitol is finally free from the fence and the benchmark is there, plain as day for anyone to see.

Easy find, excellent directions. The Old Capitol building is undergoing renovations but the disk is easily found. The disk is a University of Iowa disk and is different in appearance from most others I've seen. Thanks, Fort Rectus

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
