Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1937 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1937 (FGJ) STATION IS ON THE HIGHEST PART OF BATTLE MESA, ABOUT 2 MILES N OF THE COLORADO-WYOMING STATE LINE, ABOUT 5 MILES NE OF SLATER, AND 20 MILES E OF DIXON, ABOUT 3 MILES NW OF SADDLE POCKET RANCH. AND THE MESA IS THE MOST PROMINENT AND RUGGED FLAT-TOPPED MOUNTAIN IN THE VICINITY. STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK WEDGED IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK, AND SURROUNDED BY A TRIANGLE CHISELED IN THE ROCK. IT IS ONTHE HIGHEST POINT OF THE MESA ON THE TOP OF THE HIGHEST CENTRAL ROUNDED KNOLL. THE TOP OF AN ASPEN-FILLED DRAW LIES TO THE S OF THE STATION, AND A CRESCENT SHAPED RIDGE LEADS AROUND ITS W END TO THE SOUTHERLY TRAIL DOWN TOWARD SADDLE POCKET RANCH. REFERENCE MARKS ARE STANDARD DISKS WEDGED IN DRILL HOLES IN BOULDERS. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 LIES N OF THE STATION 3.000 METERS AND IS APPROXIMATELY THE SAME ELEVATION. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 LIES SE OF THE STATION 5.056 METERS AND IS APPROXIMATELY 1/2 FOOT HIGHER. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS A STANDARD DISK WEDGED IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK. IT LIES APPROXIMATELY 1/3 MILE S BY W FROM THE STATION, ON THE N SLOPE OF RIDGE THAT SLOPES INTO AN ASPEN-FILLED DRAW TO THE S AND E OF THE STATION. IT IS SET IN BEDROCK OUTCROP JUST UPHILL FROM THE TRAIL CROSSING THE E AND N SLOPE OF THE RIDGE. TO REACH STATION FROM DIXON, WYOMING, GO E ALONG THE MAIN-TRAVELED ROAD ALONG SNAKE RIVER VALLEY THROUGH SLATER AND SAVERY TO SADDLE POCKET RANCH A TOTAL DISTANCE OF 18.2 MILES. SADDLE POCKET RANCH LIES AT THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD. FROM THE RANCH, THE MOUNTAIN LIES ABOUT 3 MILES NW AND IS ABOUT 2100 FEET HIGHER. HORSES AND INSTRUCTIONS AS TO THE BEST TRAIL UP THE STEEP SLOPES CAN BE OBTAINED AT THE RANCH, AND IF DESIRED, A GUIDE, BUT THIS SHOULD NOT BE NECESSARY DURING THE DAYTIME.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in January 1997.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
