Recovered, some pitting but good condition overall. In the step in front of the right most door of former Horticultural Hall, at this date home to Handel and Haydn Society and Boston Magazine. Corner of Mass Ave and Huntington Ave. My coords were N 42 20.581 W 71 5.126 but could be somewhat unreliable due to building bounce. Address and visual cues might be most useful.

This would be my first benchmark find. I had never really focused on benchmark searching in the past because of how different the process is from geocaching. You don't know the location exactly, the descriptions need to be printed and brought along, the last proof it exists is probably from the 1960s... But I decided I would find one that has been found recently and near enough to my home that it can't hurt. I'm interested to see more benchmarks, I just need to find a good way to plan on looking for them.

Interesting place for a BM. This one is at 300 Mass Ave and almost directly across the street from the Mass Ave entrance to the Music Hall.

Nice building, walk by it almost everyday on the way to work. Easy find, still in decent condition.

Located just as described, condition appears unchanged from previous find.

Bumped into it, as we were on our way to find it!

It looks like the station is getting more and more worn down with time.

This photo taken, today is closest to this this benchmark. It shows the Boston skyline, and several NGS benchmarks, as well. The Prudential (MY2356) is left. The Boston Mutual (now New England Mutual - MY3176) is center. The Old Hancock (MY3180) is right.

Thousandths-digit of height stamp has been removed/damaged. Otherwise stampings and setting in good condition. Report filed with NGS self-reporting service.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
