Found after an appointment in the area...wondering if Dr. Moro was seeing the same provider the day he logged below.... but whatever. The app I was using put the disc a block or two north, maybe on top of a building, so taking the details in Dr. Moro's log was VERY useful, as I couldn't find street signs that said I was on Norway St., or that St. Paul St. was anywhere near. Was pleasantly surprised that no one was looking at me funny as I was walking on the lawn. The church is magnificent!

Recovered in good condition. Some changes to surrounding area from earlier photos, e.g., no longer railing around air conditioning grill in this area of disk. Overhead building inscription useful to orient. My coords were N 42 20.690 W 71 5.105

As previously stated, this area is no longer under construction. The quote "Lord gave the word: great..." was really helpful.

Found in location and in condition as previously reported. The area is no longer under construction, and has been landscaped. There is kind of a flower bed area between the grass and the benchmark's location, so it may feel a little odd walking through to get to the benchmark.

First off, new coordinates: N 42° 20.696' W 071° 05.105'.

Second off, it sounds like the mark was where NorStar thought it might be. Much of the construction in the area seems to have been completed, and the mark is now easily accessible.

As NorStar mentioned, Norway Street no longer continues east of Mass Ave (although, interestingly enough, the Christian Science Monitor building retains the Norway Street address, although it no longer abuts it). Furthermore, St. Paul Street, which formerly curved around the front of the Church, is gone as well.

The mark, however, lives on, at the western end of the wall, as described. The wall only reaches a foot or so above the ground, and has a metal railing to prevent people from falling into the A/C and other stuff pit below. To get to the mark, you have to go across a grassy area (well, it was dirt at the time, but presumably it will be landscaped).

I will submit a report to the NGS.

The mark is behind the front-end loader.

Did not find. The description is not clear. First, the coordinates aren't close to the actual building location. Second, there has been extensive construction around the building for the last 10 years. Now, there is an area where there are air conditioning units, surrounded by Jersey barriers and a fence. It might be elsewhere, but I was not able to find it. Note: Norway Street exists as a road only on the west side of Mass. Ave. If you trace the diagonal portion of the road across Mass. Ave., you will find that the walkway between the Publishing Society building and the church lines up with the road, and was where Norway Street used to be. The road behind the building is Clearway Street. This could be the street the person actually meant, but, I looked and still didn't find it.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991. WARNING-Repeat measurements at this control monument indicate possible vertical movement.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
