DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1950 (FGJ) THE STATION IS LOCATED ON THE TOP OF THE HIGHEST HILL IN THE CITY OF CORTLAND ON PROPERTY OWNED BY THE MUNICIPAL WATER WORKS AND IN A WIRE FENCED ENCLOSURE JUST TO THE SOUTH OF THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING OF THE STATE NORMAL SCHOOL AND 15 FEET NORTH OF THE NORTH OF TWO WATER TANKS. IT IS 120 FEET EAST OF THE WEST WIRE FENCE. 75 FEET WEST OF THE EAST WIRE FENCE. 27 FEET SOUTH OF THE NORTH WIRE FENCE AND IS STAMPED NORMAL 2 1950 AND SET FLUSH WITH THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. REFERENCE MARK NO.2 IS SOUTH OF THE STATION SET FLUSH WITH CONCRETE BASE OF NEARER OF TWO LARGE WATER TANKS AND IS STAMPED NORMAL R.M. 2 1934. REFERENCE MARK NO.3 IS SOUTHEAST OF THE STATION SET FLUSH WITH CONCRETE BASE OF THE PUMP HOUSE AND IS STAMPED NORMAL 2 R.M. 3 1950. REFERENCE MARK NO.4 IS WEST OF THE STATION SET FLUSH WITH CONCRETE BASE OF NEARER OF TWO LARGE WATER TANKS AND IS STAMPED NORMAL 2 R.M. 4 1950. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS APPROXIMATELY 1-1/4 MILES NORTH-NORTHWEST OF THE STATION ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF A LARGE YELLOW COLORED CATTLE BARN ON THE FARM OF G. STEVENS. THE MARK IS SET IN A LARGE BOULDER WHICH PROJECTS 18 INCHES. IT IS 3 FEET SOUTH OF THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE BARN, 4 FEET EAST OF THE CATTLE ENTRANCE TO BARN, 15 FEET NORTHEAST OF SILO AND STAMPED NORMAL 2 1950. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM THE CORTLAND COUNTY HOSPITAL AT THE CORNER OF HOMER AVENUE AND WEST MAIN STREET IN CORTLAND, GO WEST ON WEST MAIN STREET FOR 0.6 MILE TO T INTERSECTION OF WEST HOMER ROAD. TURN RIGHT, NORTH, AND GO 0.3 MILE TO DIRT FARM ROAD LEFT. TURN LEFT AND GO 0.15 MILE TO CATTLE BARN AND MARK AS DESCRIBED. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE POST OFFICE IN CORTLAND, GO EAST ON MAIN STREET TO COURT STREET, TURN LEFT (WEST) AND GO 0.25 MILE TO NORMAL SCHOOL AND STATION ON HIGHEST PART OF HILL.

RECOVERY NOTE BY NY DEPT OF TRANSP 1975 STATION MARK AND BOTH REFERENCE MARKS WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION AS DESCRIBED IN 1950, EXCEPT THAT THE STATION IS NOW SURROUNDED BY BUILDINGS. THE AZIMUTH MARK WAS SEARCHED FOR BUT NOT FOUND. THE STATION IS LOCATED ON THE TOP OF THE HIGHEST HILL IN THE WESTERN PORTION OF THE CITY OF CORTLAND ON PROPERTY OWNED BY THE MUNICIPAL WATER WORKS. THIS LAND IS ADJACENT TO CORTLAND STATE COLLEGE. THE STATION IS WITHIN A WIRE FENCE ENCLOSURE 15 FEET NORTH OF TWO WATER TANKS AND IS SET FLUSH TO THE GROUND.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in January 1999. No horizontal observational check was made to the station.
  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
