Walking over this bridge isn't for the weak-hearted. But if you want to find two benchmarks (this one AND NC0594), it's worth the adrenaline rush!

photoThe benchmark, not exactly in tip-top shape

Found this BM and NC0594 within about five minutes. They were less than 1/10 mile apart, same railroad, two bridges that almost adjoined each other.

photoCity of Jamestown 2
Mark for NC0595 - city of Jamestown 2. Mark is quite worn, and it is very difficult to see the 2. Cannot see it in the picture.
photoRiver from RR bridge
This is the Chadakoin River taken from next to NC0595 by the railroad bridge. This is the river the bridge goes over, with a street bridge and factory. Note that the river actually runs UNDER the factory and comes out again on the other side of the large building.
photoLooking east from the mark
This is the view looking east from the mark. Note the other railroad bridge in the background (you can see the sides). BM NC0594 is on the abutment to that bridge. The river in the previous photo is off to the left.
photoThe bridge from the street bridge
This is the RR bridge looking up from the street bridge in a previous photo. Note the lack of railings or handrails of any kind. The mark is at the far left side of the bridge, on the abutment facing this side.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
