Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1975 by USLS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY US LAKE SURVEY 1975 (WAB) STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 1.5 MILES NORTH OF THE DOWNTOWN SECTION OF ERIE, ON THE SOUTHEASTERN EXTREMITY OF PRESQUE ISLE, ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE ENTRANCE CHANNEL LEADING TO ERIE HARBOR. JUST SOUTHWEST OF THE U.S. COAST GUARD STATION AND ATOP THE ERIE HARBOR INNER FRONT RANGE LIGHT STRUCTURE WHICH IS SITUATED ON THE WESTERNMOST END OF THE NORTH-SEAWALL DEFINING THE HARBOR LINE AND ENTRANCE TO THE INNER HARBOR. TO REACH THE STATION FROM PERRY SQUARE AT ERIE, PROCEED WESTERLY ALONG PA RTE 5 ALT FOR ABOUT 4 MILES TO PA RTE 832 (PENINSULA DRIVE). TURN RIGHT ON PENINSULA DRIVE AND CONTINUE NORTHERLY FOR 0.9 MILES TO THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO PRESQUE STATE PARK. CONTINUE NORTHERLY AND EASTERLY ALONG PENINSULA DRIVE, TRAVERSING THE SOUTHERN PERIMETER OF PRESQUE ISLE, FOR 7.9 MILES TO THE U.S. COAST GUARD STATION DESCRIBED ABOVE. CONTINUE ON FOOT FROM THE STATIONS PARKING LOT. WESTERLY ALONG THE CONCRETE SEAWALL TO THE STEEL SKELETON LIGHT/RANGE STRUCTURE AT THE OUTER END OF THE WALL. AN ADEQUATE HAND-OVER-HAND LADDER PROVIDES ACCESS TO A TRAP DOOR ON THE UPPER PLATFORM BELOW THE LIGHT ITSELF. AND THE STATION SET FLUSH ON SAME PLATFORM (STEEL) SOUTHWEST OF THE RANGE LIGHT. STATION MARK IS A STANDARD NGS BRONZE DISK EPOXIED TO THE STEEL PLATFORM ABOUT 4 FEET BELOW THE LIGHT PLATE FOOTING, AND IS STAMPED ERIE HARBOR LSC 1975. NO REFERENCE MARKS WERE SET. PERMISSION TO ESTABLISH THE STATION WAS OBTAINED FROM THE U.S. COAST GUARD 9TH DIST., CLEVELAND, OH. TO OCCUPY THE STATION, AN INSTRUMENT STAND WILL HAVE TO BE FABRICATED AND AFFIXED TO THE EDGE OF THE RANGE LIGHT PLATE. SUCH THAT THE TRIBRACH EXTENDS OUTWARD OVER THE MARK. THE STEEL STRUCTURE IS SUFFICIENTLY STABLE FOR OBSERVATIONS. THE STATION AFFORDS EXCELLENT VISIBILITY TO ALL POINTS IN AND AROUND ERIE HARBOR. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS SET PLUMB BELOW THE STATION MARK AT THE FOUNDATION OF THE LIGHT. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK 1 METER.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in January 1999.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
