Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1946 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1946 (CL) THE STATION IS LOCATED ON THE SUMMIT OF CABIN CREEK PEAK, ONE OF THE PEAKS OF THE SALT RIVER RANGE, A HIGH RANGE OF MOUNTAINS BETWEEN THE SALT AND GREYS RIVER AND THE SITE OF THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE CABIN CREEK LOOKOUT CABIN. THE PEAK IS ABOUT 3 MILES (AIRLINE) WEST OF THE CONFLUENCE OF SHEEP CREEK AND GREYS RIVER. THE DISK IS SET FLUSH IN ROCK OUTCROP PROJECTING ABOUT 2 INCHES, 22 FEET SOUTH BY EAST OF THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF THE CABIN, 29-1/2 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE CABIN AND IS STAMPED CABIN 1946. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS A DISK SET FLUSH IN OUTCROPPING ROCK FLUSH WITH THE GROUND AND IS ABOUT 4 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION. IT IS SOUTHEAST OF THE STATION, 18-1/2 FEET EAST OF THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF THE CABIN, 23 FEET EAST-SOUTHEAST OF THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE CABIN AND IS STAMPED CABIN NO. 1 1946. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS A DISK SET FLUSH IN ROCK OUTCROP PROJECTING ABOUT 2 FEET AND ABOUT 10 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION. IT IS NORTH-NORTHEAST OF THE STATION AND STAMPED CABIN NO. 2 1946. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS APPROXIMATELY 0.75 MILE NORTH-NORTHEAST OF THE STATION. IT IS SET FLUSH IN THE TOP OF A LONE, PROMINENT ROCK OUTCROP ABOUT 10 FEET HIGH AND ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE TRAIL LEADING TO THE STATION AND IS STAMPED CABIN 1946. IT IS ABOUT 2 HOURS ALONG THE TRAIL FROM THE MEADOW CREEK RANGER STATION AND JUST BEFORE REACHING A SNOW BASIN AT THE BASE OF THE STATION PEAK. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY NO. 89 AND STATE HIGHWAY NO. 29 IN ALPINE, WYO., GO SOUTH ON HIGHWAYS NOS. 89 AND 29 FOR 1.6 MILES. HERE TURN LEFT, EAST, ON THE GREYS RIVER ROAD AS PER SIGN AND GO 27.5 MILES TO YOUNGS RANCH AND STORE, CONTINUE ON UP THE RIVER FOR 3.45 MILES TO SIGN MEADOW CREEK RANGER STATION, TURN RIGHT ACROSS THE RIVER AND GO 0.1 MILE TO THE RANGER STATION AND THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL. FROM HERE FOLLOW WELL DEFINED TRAIL FROM THE RANGER STATION WEST TO THE END OF A PASTURE, ABOUT 0.25 MILE, THEN TAKE LEFT FORK UP RIDGE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE CANYON, THEN FOLLOW ALONG THE CREST OF THE RIDGE BETWEEN DEADHORSE AND MEADOW CREEKS UP TO THE HEAD OF DEADHORSE CREEK AND THE SNOW BASIN AT THE FOOT AND NORTH OF CABIN CREEK PEAK. (THE AZIMUTH MARK IS ALONG THE TRAIL JUST BEFORE REACHING THIS POINT). FROM HERE FOLLOW THE TRAIL ALONG THE STEEP SIDEHILL TO THE NORTH AND WEST SIDE OF THE BASIN TO THE CREST OF THE RIDGE NORTHWEST OF THE PEAK. HERE GO LEFT ALONG CREST OF RIDGE AND FOLLOW TO THE PEAK, THE LOOKOUT CABIN AND THE STATION AS DESCRIBED.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in January 1997.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
