DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1933 (FGJ) THE STATION IS ON THE HIGHEST PART OF THE MOUNTAIN 13.06 METERS NW OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER AND ABOUT 6 FEET FROM THE EDGE OF THE CLIFF ON THE OUTCROPPING BEDROCK. STATION AND REFERENCE MARKS ARE STANDARD BRONZE DISKS IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK AS DESCRIBED IN NOTES 2 AND 12A. BEAR BUTTE LOOKOUT, AZIMUTH MARK, IS ABOUT 12 MILES N OF STATION. STATION IS BEST REACHED BY GOING N FROM KLAMATH AGENCY ON U.S. HIGHWAY 97 TO MILEPOST 224, CONTINUE 0.2 MILE TO A ROAD LEADING TO THE RIGHT MARKED BEAR FLAT. FOLLOW THIS ROAD 17.4 MILES TO A LARGE RANCH HOUSE AT A STREAM CROSSING. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD 0.8 MILE TO A SIGN ON THE RIGHT MARKING THE CENTER OF THE STOCK DRIVEWAY. TURN RIGHT HERE AND FOLLOW THE MAIN-TRAVELED ROAD 8.5 MILES TO A SIGN YAMSAY MOUNTAIN LOOKOUT. TURN LEFT AND FOLLOW THIS ROAD 8.0 MILES TO THE TOP OF THE HILL, THE LOOKOUT AND THE STATION. (NOTE) THE STATION WAS MARKED IN 1932 AND OBSERVED IN 1933. MT. THIELSEN IS ABOUT 39 MILES NW OF STATION. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK 1.4 METERS.

THE POINT MAY BE REACHED BY ROAD. IT IS ABOUT 15 MILES SW OF SILVER LAKE TOWN, BUT IS EASIER TO REACH BY TURNING E FROM THE DALLES-CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY (U.S. 97) AT MILEAGE 223.8. STATION MARKED BY STANDARD DISK IN BEDROCK, NOTE 2. ALL MARKS ARE STAMPED YAMSEY MT INSTEAD OF YAMSAY MOUNTAIN AS ORIGINALLY DESCRIBED. A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS. THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 21 MILES SOUTHWEST OF SILVER LAKE, ON THE TOP OF YAMSAY MOUNTAIN, NEAR THE INDIAN SERVICE LOOKOUT TOWER. TO REACH THE STATION FROM SILVER LAKE, GO NORTHWEST ON STATE HIGHWAY 31 FOR 1.4 MILES TO A ROAD LEFT AT SIGN KLAMATH AGENCY 70. TURN LEFT, GO WESTERLY 8.7 MILES TO THE FREMONT NATIONAL FOREST BOUNDARY. CONTINUE WESTERLY 6.2 MILES TO LAKE AND KLAMATH COUNTY LINE. CONTINUE WESTERLY 0.7 MILE TO A CROSS ROAD. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD WEST AND SOUTHWEST 1.2 MILES TO A FORK. TURN LEFT, GO SOUTHERLY 1.4 MILES TO A REVERSE Y FORK. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD SOUTHERLY 4.7 MILES TO A REVERSE Y FORK AT A CURVE. TURN LEFT, GO EASTERLY 0.1 MILE TO THE JACKSON CREEK GUARD STATION ON THE LEFT. TURN RIGHT, GO SOUTHERLY 1.7 MILES TO A ROAD LEFT. THIS ROAD LEADS TO THE TOP OF YAMSAY MOUNTAIN AND THE STATION AND IS APPROXIMATELY 8 MILES DISTANT. THE FIRST OF JULY 1953 A TRUCK COULD BE DRIVEN 5.4 MILES UP THIS ROAD WHERE DEEP SNOW WAS ENCOUNTERED. THE STATION MARK IS STAMPED YAMSEY MT 1932. IT IS A STANDARD DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK. IT IS 43 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE CENTER OF THE YAMSAY MOUNTAIN LOOKOUT TOWER AND 8 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE RIM OF A HIGH CLIFF. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS STAMPED YAMSEY MT NO 1 1932. IT IS A STANDARD DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK. IT IS APPROXIMATELY 1 FOOT LOWER THAN THE STATION MARK. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS STAMPED YAMSEY MT NO 2 1932. IT IS A STANDARD DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK. IT IS ABOUT 6 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION MARK. THE U.S.I.S. STATION YAMSAY 1926 MENTIONED IN THE DESCRIPTION BY N.S. OF THE U.S.F.S. IS A DRILL HOLE IN A LOOSE PIECE OF BEDROCK AND IS OF NO VALUE AS A REFERENCE. RODMAN ROCK LOOKOUT HOUSE WILL SERVE AS AN AZIMUTH MARK.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1967 (CAA) THE STATION MARK AND REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION TO THE REFERENCE MARKS CHECKED FAIRLY CLOSE TO THE PREVIOUS OBSERVATIONS. THE OLD FIRE LOOKOUT TOWER HAS BEEN DESTROYED AND A NEW ONE HAS BEEN CONSTRUCTED ON THE MOUNTAIN. A NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS. THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 20 MILES SOUTHWEST OF SILVER LAKE, 36 MILES NORTHEAST OF CHILOQUIN, 25 MILES EAST OF U.S. HIGHWAY 97 AND ON TOP OF YAMSAY MOUNTAIN. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE POST OFFICE IN CHILOQUIN, GO NORTHEAST ON FIRST AVENUE FOR 0.05 MILE TO A PAVED CROSS STREET, TURN LEFT AND GO NORTHWEST ON THE PAVED ROAD FOR 0.3 MILE TO A FORK. TAKE THE RIGHT FORK AND CONTINUE NORTHWEST ON THE PAVED ROAD FOR 1.0 MILE TO U.S. HIGHWAY 97. BEAR RIGHT AND GO NORTH ON U.S. HIGHWAY 97 FOR 3.55 MILES TO A SMALL BRIDGE SPANNING SPRING CREEK. CONTINUE NORTH ON U.S. HIGHWAY 97 FOR 15.8 MILES TO A CROSS ROAD AND SIGN KLAMATH FOREST NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE 7. TURN RIGHT AND GO EASTERLY ON THE PAVED AND GRAVELED ROAD FOR 8.9 MILES TO A BRIDGE AT THE EAST END OF KLAMATH MARSH. CONTINUE EASTERLY ON THE GRAVELED ROAD FOR 1.75 MILES TO A CROSS ROAD. CONTINUE EAST AND NORTH ON THE GRAVELED ROAD FOR 6.5 MILES TO A BRIDGE. CONTINUE NORTH AND EAST ON THE GRAVELED ROAD FOR 3.95 MILES TO A GRAVELED SIDE ROAD RIGHT. TURN RIGHT AND GO EASTERLY ON ROAD 30037 FOR 4.45 MILES TO THE JACKSON CREEK GUARD STATION. CONTINUE EAST AND SOUTH ON ROAD 30037 FOR 1.3 MILES TO A FORK AND SIGN YAMSAY MTN LO 8. TAKE THE LEFT FORK AND FOLLOW THE WINDING MOUNTAIN ROAD FOR 7.6 MILES TO THE FIRE LOOKOUT TOWER AND THE STATION AS DESCRIBED. THE STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED YAMSEY MT 1932, SET IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK. IT IS 8 FEET SOUTH OF THE EDGE OF A ROCK CLIFF AND 19.6 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE NORTHEAST LEG OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED YAMSEY MT NO 1 1932, SET IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK WHICH IS ABOUT 1 FOOT LOWER IN ELEVATION THAN THE STATION. IT IS 17.4 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE NORTHEAST LEG OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED YAMSEY MT NO 2 1932, SET IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK WHICH IS ABOUT 6 FEET LOWER IN ELEVATION THAN THE STATION. IT IS 6.2 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST LEG OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER. DUE TO A LEG OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER BEING ON LINE, IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO MEASURE BETWEEN REFERENCE MARKS. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK 5 FEET. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN 20 MILES SOUTHWEST OF SILVER LAKE.

RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1974 (CLN) THE STATION MARK, AND BOTH REFERENCE MARKS WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. REFERENCE MARK NO. 3 WAS ESTABLISHED. A NEW AND COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS. THE STATION IS ON GOVERNMENT OWNED LAND, IN THE NORTHWEST 1/4 SECTION 36, RANGE 11 E, TOWNSHIP 31 S. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JACKSON CREEK GUARD STATION, GO SOUTH ON FOREST SERVICE ROAD 3037 FOR 0.4 MILE TO THE JUNCTION WITH FOREST SERVICE ROAD 3072, AND A SIGN READING, YAMSAY MTN LOOKOUT 8, TURN LEFT AS PER SIGN, AND GO EASTERLY FOLLOWING THE SIGNS FOR YAMSAY MTN. LOOKOUT FOR 8.0 MILES TO THE LOOKOUT, AND STATION. THE STATION MARK, STAMPED YAMSEY 1932, IS A STANDARD DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK, 18 FEET NORTH-NORTHEAST OF THE NORTHEAST LEG OF THE LOOKOUT, AND 7 FEET SOUTH OF THE EDGE OF THE RIM. (NOTE 2) REFERENCE MARK NO. 1, STAMPED YAMSEY MT NO 1 1932, IS A STANDARD DISK IN BEDROCK, 17 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE NORTHEAST LEG OF THE LOOKOUT, AND 15 FEET SOUTH OF THE EDGE OF THE RIM. (NOTE 12A) REFERENCE MARK NO. 2, STAMPED YAMSEY MT NO 2 1932, IS A STANDARD DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK, 6 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST LEG OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER, AND 8 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION. (NOTE 12A) REFERENCE MARK NO. 3, STAMPED NO 3 1968, IS A U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY REFERENCE MARK DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK, 11.5 FEET WEST-NORTHWEST OF THE NORTHWEST LEG OF THE LOOKOUT, AND 5 FEET SOUTH OF THE EDGE OF THE RIM. NOTE--TO SEE REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 FROM THE STATION IT IS NECESSARY TO BUILD A SMALL PLUMB BENCH OVER THE REFERENCE MARK.   • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in October 1991.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
