DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1942 (GWL) THE STATION IS LOCATED ON THE HIGHEST SUMMIT OF VANDERWHACKER MOUNTAIN AT THE SITE OF THE VANDERWHACKER MOUNTAIN LOOKOUT TOWER. IT IS SET FLUSH IN BEDROCK NEAR THE CENTER OF THE BASE OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER. IT IS A BRONZE DISK ABOUT 3 INCHES IN DIAMETER WITH A CROSS MARKED IN THE CENTER AND STAMPED STA. NO.55 AND AROUND THE OUTSIDE EDGE OF THE DISK IS STAMPED N.Y.S. ADIRONDACK SURVEY VERPLANCE COLVIN SUPT. 1880. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF STATE HIGHWAYS 28 AND 28 N IN NORTH CREEK, GO N ON HIGHWAY 28 N FOR 16.3 MILES, THEN TURN LEFT JUST AFTER CROSSING THE BOREAS RIVER BRIDGE AND FOLLOW WOODS ROAD FOR 2.8 MILES TO A TRAIL ON THE RIGHT AT SIGN VANDERWHACKER FIRE OBSERVATORY AND END OF TRUCK TRAVEL. FROM HERE FOLLOW A GOOD TRAIL AND MARKERS FOR 3 MILES TO THE LOOKOUT TOWER AND THE STATION. ABOUT 2 MILES OF THE TRAIL, TO THE RANGER CABIN, IS OF SLIGHT GRADE BUT THROUGH MARSHY LAND, FROM THE RANGER CABIN IS A MILE OF STEEP GRADE. A 2-HOUR PACK. THIS STATION CONNECTED BY TRAVERSE TO C. AND G.S. TRIANGULATION STATION VANDERWHACKER. DISTANCE 2.458 METERS (8.07 FEET).

  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
