Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1946 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1946 (CL) THE STATION IS LOCATED ON THE HIGHEST POINT OF A GRASSY HILL KNOWN AS MUNGER MTN., AND THE LOCATION OF THE MUNGER MTN. LOOKOUT CABIN. THE HILL IS NORTH OF THE LITTLE FALL RIVER, ABOUT 3 MILES FROM ITS MOUTH AND 3 MILES AIRLINE NORTHWEST OF THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAYS NO. 89 AND 187 AT THE MOUTH OF THE HOBACK RIVER. THE DISK IS SET FLUSH IN ROCK OUTCROP ABOUT 1 FOOT BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND, 6.8 FT. EAST OF THE EAST CORNER OF THE LOOKOUT CABIN, 18.6 FT. NORTHEAST OF THE SOUTH CORNER OF THE CABIN AND IS STAMPED MUNGER 1946. THERE IS SUPPOSEDLY A U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY DISK SET UNDER THE FLOOR OF THE LOOKOUT CABIN BUT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET UNDER THE FLOOR OF THE CABIN AND SO THIS MARK WAS NOT RECOVERED. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS A DISK SET FLUSH IN ROCK OUTCROP ABOUT 2 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION AND IS STAMPED MUNGER NO 1 1946. IT IS SOUTH BY WEST OF THE STATION, 9 FEET EAST OF THE SOUTH CORNER OF THE CABIN AND 16-1/2 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE EAST CORNER OF THE CABIN. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS A DISK SET FLUSH IN THE CONCRETE BASE OF THE NORTH CORNER OF THE LOOKOUT CABIN, FLUSH WITH THE GROUND STAMPED MUNGER NO 2 1946 AND IS NORTHWEST OF THE STATION. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS A DISK SET FLUSH IN ROCK OUTCROP PROJECTING ABOUT 1 FOOT AND IS STAMPED MUNGER 1946. IT IS ABOUT 0.1 MILE SOUTH OF THE STATION ON THE SAME RIDGE AS THE LOOKOUT CABIN AND STATION. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE SQUARE IN JACKSON GO WEST AND SOUTH ON U.S. HIGHWAY NO. 187 AND NO. 89 FOR 14 MILES TO A JUNCTION, TURN RIGHT ON HIGHWAY NO. 89 AND FOLLOW FOR 5.05 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD RIGHT AND SIGN WILSON 18 MILES. TURN RIGHT ON THE GRAVEL ROAD AND GO 3.1 MILES THEN TURN SHARP RIGHT ON A SIDE ROAD JUST AFTER CROSSING A BRIDGE AND GO 0.3 MILES. HERE TURN LEFT ON A DIM ROAD AND GO 0.2 MILE TO SOME CORRALS AND THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL. FROM HERE FOLLOW A WELL DEFINED TRAIL UP THE MOUNTAIN TO THE LOOKOUT CABIN AND THE STATION AS DESCRIBED. ABOUT A 1-1/2 HOUR PACK.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in January 1997.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
