DESCRIBED BY US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY 1946 (CL) THE STATION IS LOCATED 11 MILES NORTH OF JACKSON ON THE HIGHEST PART OF BLACKTAIL BUTTE. IT IS A COPPER BOLT AND ABOUT 1 INCH IN DIAMETER PLACED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BED ROCK. THE MARK IS 25 FEET SOUTH OF THE SHOULDER OF THE HILL, AND 18 FEET WEST OF THE SHOULDER OF THE HILL, ON THE TOP OF A VERY LARGE BOULDER. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED BLACKTAIL NO. 1 1946 (USGS), SET IN THE TOP OF A 12 BY 12 INCH CONCRETE POST PROJECTING ABOUT 6 INCHES. IT IS 45 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE WESTERLY OF TWO LARGE PINE TREES, AND ABOUT 15 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED BLACKTAIL NO. 2 1946 (USGS), SET IN THE TOP OF A 12 BY 12 INCH CONCRETE POST PROJECTING ABOUT 6 INCHES. IT IS IN THE SOUTHWEST CURVE OF THE ROAD MADE BY THE SURVEY PARTY, AND ABOUT 4 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED BLACKTAIL (USGS) 1946, SET IN THE TOP OF A 4 INCH CAST IRON PIPE PROJECTING ABOUT 6 INCHES. IT IS 0.1 MILE EAST OF CURVE AND THE PLACE WHERE THE ROAD IS LEFT TO GO TO THE STATION, 30 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTER OF THE ROAD, 3 FEET EAST OF A WHITE REFERENCE POST, AND 1 FOOT NORTH OF THE FENCE LINE. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE SQUARE IN JACKSON GO NORTH ON U.S. HIGHWAY 187 FOR 10.5 MILES TO A CROSS ROAD (WHICH IS EVEN WITH THE SOUTH END OF THE MOUNTAIN). TURN RIGHT (EAST) AND GO 2.0 MILES, TO THE SOUTHEAST SIDE OF THE HILL AND A TRACK ROAD ON THE LEFT. TURN LEFT AND PASS THROUGH A GATE AND GO 1.2 MILE TO A FORK, TAKE THE LEFT FORK AND GO 1.0 MILE, THENCE LEFT SOUTH FOR 1/2 MILE TO THE TOP OF THE BUTTE AND THE STATION AS DESCRIBED ABOVE.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in January 1997.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
