Documented History (by the NGS)

1/1/1980 by NGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1980 (CLN) THE SURFACE MARK WAS DESTROYED DURING THE DISMANTLEING OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER. THE UNDERGROUND MARK AND REFERENCE MARK 2 WERE RECOVERED. A NEW SURFACE MARK AND REFERENCE MARK 3 WERE ESTABLISHED AT THIS TIME. THE AZIMUTH MARK WAS SEARCHED FOR BUT WAS NOT RECOVERED. IT IS BELIEVED THAT IT IS STILL IN PLACE BUT COVERED BY BRUSH. A TOWER OF AT LEAST 75 FEET WOULD BE NEEDED TO USE THIS STATION. THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 4 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF ELKTON ON A TIMBERED MOUNTAIN. THE LAND IS OWNED BY THE WHIPPLE RANCH OF ELKTON. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAYS 138 AND 38 AT THE NORTHEAST EDGE OF ELKTON, GO EAST ON HIGHWAY 138 FOR 1.65 MILES TO CROSSROADS TURN LEFT ON COUNTY ROAD 203 AND GO 0.25 MILES TO A T JUNCTION TURN RIGHT AND GO 0.5 MILE TO A T JUNCTION, TURN LEFT ON GRAVEL DRIVE AND GO 0.75 MILE TO ROAD FORK TAKE RIGHT FORK, LONGVIEW DRIVE AND GO 0.35 TO END OF COUNTY RD, CONTINUE UP HILL 1.5 MILES TO A LOCKED GATE, KEY TO GATE CAN BE OBTAINED AT WHIPPLE RANCH WHICH IS LOCATED 3.7 MILES EAST OF ELKTON ON HIGHWAY 138. THE UNDERGROUND MARK IS A STANDARD US COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY (NOW NOS) DISK STAMPED---BELL MTN 1953---SET INTO AN IRREGULAR MASS OF CONCRETE 0.76 METER (2.5 FEET) BELOW THE SURFACE. REFERENCE MARK NO. 3 IS A STANDARD NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY DISK STAMPED---BELL MOUNTAIN 1953 NO 3 1980---SET INTO THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE NORTHWEST ONE OF THREE CONCRETE FOOTINGS FOR THE OLD LOOKOUT TOWER. THE FOOTINGS ARE 3 FEET SQUARE AND PROJECT 1 FOOT. Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in October 1991.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
