Found while visiting the park.

Found after 10 minutes of wandering. The GPS was off by 70 feet. Wasn't as far off the road as the GPS took me.
Actual GPS reading was 44 22.731N 068 13.948W

Found easily by using ZHANNA'S coordinates.

Found as described in good condition.

The description needs to be updated: the "old road leading to Cadillac Mountain" is the park Loop road. If you take Route 233 from Bar Harbor, enter the park just before 233 goes under the park road, turn left and go about .15 mile past the overpass. The mark will be up on your left.

No, this is not PE0279. It's a non-NGS bench mark put by the USGS on the top of Cadillac Mountain. The interesting thing is that it is part the K series ("K 24") surveyed by the USGS in 1934. It seems to be the only one of that series the NGS did not include in it's database.

While vacationing on M.D.I. I decided to search for a few local benchmarks. I drove out along the Park Loop Road from Bar Harbor and easily found the mark using the historical description. At the station my Garmin GPSmap76 receiver indicated approximately 64 feet from the posted coordinates. The disc was partially covered by dried pine litter and it is in very good condition. ~Rich in NEPA~

DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1962 1.6 MI W FROM BAR HARBOR. 0.35 MILE WEST ALONG COTTAGE STREET FROM THE POST OFFICE AT BAR HARBOR, THENCE 1.1 MILES SOUTH AND WEST ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 233, THENCE 0.15 MILE SOUTH ALONG AN OLD ROAD LEADING TO CADILLAC MOUNTAIN, 0.15 MILE SOUTHWEST OF AN OVERHEAD OVERPASS, 76 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE ROAD, 68 YARDS SOUTHWEST OF AN ABANDONED CROSS ROAD, SET IN THE TOP OF A ROCK OUTCROP ABOUT FLUSH WITH THE GROUND AND ABOUT 12 FEET ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE ROAD.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
