Documented History (by the NGS)

1/1/1965 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1965 (NCS) A STANDARD REFERENCE DISK STAMPED SCHOODIC NO 3 1860, SET IN A DRILL HOLE IN EXPOSED BEDROCK, ON THE SOUTHERN EXTREMITY OF A OF SCHOODIC HEAD IN ACADIA NATIONAL PARK EXTENSION ON THE SCHOODIC PENINSULA. THIS SPOT GIVES CLEAR VIEW FROM NORTHEAST TO WEST, AND WAS ESTABLISHED BECAUSE OF HEAVY GROWTH SURROUNDING THE STATION MARK. TO REACH THE STATION FROM SCHOODIC 1860, PACK SOUTHWARD TO THE TIP OF THE SHOULDER AND THE STATION. SCHOODIC RM 3 THIS RM WAS ESTABLISHED BY SOMEONE FROM THE COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY FOR MR. C.F. MERRIAM ABOUT 1965, BY TRAVERSE FROM STATION SCHOODIC 1860. I CANT FIND ANYTHING ON IT IN THE PUBLISHED DATA. I OCCUPIED IT TO PROVE THAT SULLIVANS HOUSE CHIMNEY NO. 1 1860 IS ACTUALLY THE EAST SULLIVAN UNION CHURCH CUPOLA, AND ALSO TO MAKE A CHECK ON THE REBUILT CHURCH IN BAR HARBOR (BAR HARBOR CONG. CHURCH SPIRE).

TAKE SIDE ROAD RIGHT AND FOLLOW MACADAM ROAD SOUTH ALONG WEST SIDE OF SCHOODIC PENINSULA FOR 4.0 MILES TO FORK. TAKE LEFT FORK, A GRAVELED ROAD, THROUGH A PIPE GATE, AND GO 0.2 MILE TO FORK. TAKE LEFT FORK AND GO 0.9 MILE TO END OF TRUCK TRAVEL JUST WEST OF SUMMIT OF HILL. PACK NORTH ON DIM TRAIL UP ALONG RIDGE FOR ABOUT 150 YARDS TO SCHOODIC 1860. CONTINUE NORTH, DOWN SLOPE, FOR 230 FEET TO STATION. STATION MARK IS A STANDARD REFERENCE MARK DISK STAMPED SCHOODIC NO 3 1860, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK. A 6-INCH-SQUARE POST ABOUT 4 FEET HIGH, PAINTED WHITE, IS CENTERED OVER THE MARK. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN 3 MILES SSE OF WINTER HARBOR.
