I have lived here for about 4 years now, and never realized that this was a benchmark..I have walked past this church hundreds if not thousands of times. I guess just today I have notcied it was a benchmark...Boy was that one an easy one....

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1944 (FLP) THIS STATION IS LOST.
01/01/1970 by NGS (SEE DESCRIPTION)
RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1970 (LFS) A RECORD BOOK AT THE BAR HARBOR FIRE STATION SHOWS THAT THE OLD CHURCH BURNED DOWN ON FEB. 1942. A NEW CHURCH WAS LATER BUILT ON THE SAME PLOT OF GROUND, AND OBSERVATIONS MADE ON THE STEEPLE OF THIS NEW CHURCH IN NOVEMBER, 1970 FROM CADILLAC GROUND AND SCHOODIC RM 3 INDICATE THAT IT IS AT NEARLY THE SAME POSITION AS THE OLD STEEPLE. AT CADILLAC GROUND THE NEW OBSERVATION OF THE ANGLE FROM SCHOODIC MTN. FIRE TOWER 1934 TO THE STEEPLE IS 13 SECONDS LOWER THAN THE PUBLISHED ANGLE. AT SCHOODIC RM 3 THE NEW OBSERVATION ON THE ANGLE FROM SCHOODIC MTN. FIRE TOWER 1934 TO THE STEEPLE IS 24 SECONDS LOWER THAN THE PUBLISHED ANGLE. NEW CHURCH STEEPLE IS A SHARP, GREEN SPIRE, ON SOUTH END OF THE BAR HARBOR CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, LOCATED IN THE NORTHWEST ANGLE OF THE INTERSECTION OF KENNEBEC ST. AND MT. DESERT ST. IN BAR HARBOR. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN IN BAR HARBOR.
