pretty fun looking for this one while geocaching got creative and found the ones here

Found marker disk SAVAGE NO 1 on July 26. Disk is in good condition. Did not look for the referenced bolt, because of limited time to search that afternoon (incoming fog banks).

This is our first benchmark find. We found it after finding the Eliot Mountain Cache. Nice hike. We also visited the Thuya gardens.

Found while caching in the park.

We parked at Thuya Gardens, entered the Gardens and followed the rear fence to the right to the gate to Eliot Mountain Trail. After getting the Eliot Mountain Cache we continued up the trail to the summit. The two Reference Marks were easily spotted. After a few minutes of looking for the Station we alligned a hiking stick with each Reference Mark and searched where the lines intersected and soon found the Station. In the excitement of finding this old Benchmark I forgot to take a picture of one of the Reference Marks.
We found the Station at N44 18.163 W68 16.460

Had to search around for a long time before I came across one RM. Easily found the second RM. Bit of a struggle to find the benchmark since it's just a bolt that is almost flush with the rock. Blends in very well with the surroundings.

after Eliot Mountain Cache we saw there must be an benchmark in this area but we didn't have the coridinates so it was a lon search but we've found it
TFTBM (our second)

After doing the Bass harbor visual we continued on to find this.

Found 1902 while doing Eliot MT Cache

Stumbled upon two benchmarks while doing geocache on Eliot Mt. Didn't find Savage Mountain 1870 so can't log as a find. Hope to be back someday. We were in Bar Harbor to do the Acadia National Park Earthcache Program and celebrate our 44th. anniversary.

Found this benchmark a short distance up the trail from the Charles Eliot monument. Acadiahiker

Found while hiking/geocaching. Took picture as proof. Very pretty spot. Brooski

We got a little spun around on Eliot Mountain and stumbled upon this by accident while geocaching ... I guess there was a good reason we got lost!

Found it while hiking up from the cache with Brooklin Sailor and First Mate. Apparently Savage Mountain has several names including Asticou Hill, Elliott Mountain and Savage Mountain.

Found on a hike over Elliot Mountain. I'm surprised that nobody has logged this one yet. It seems to be a popular site to take a rest as there is a chair made out of rocks next to RM2. In the chair photo RM1 is on the right side near the small rock, RM2 is to the left of the chair and the Copper Bolt is in line with the blue backpack near the small tree.

Thanks to cacher HARAUP who spotted this last year and tipped me off to look for it!

Documented History (by the NGS)

1/1/1870 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1870 (GAF) ON THE HIGH HILL OF THAT NAME, LOCATED ABOUT 3/8 MILE E OF THE HEAD OF NORTHEAST HARBOR, MOUNT DESERT ISLAND. A PATH LEADS FROM AUGUSTUS SAVAGES HOUSE TO THE SUMMIT. THE STATION IS ABOUT 300 FEET SW FROM THE HIGHEST PEAK OF THE MOUNTAIN AND 13 FEET W OF THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE LEDGE ON WHICH IT IS LOCATED. IT IS A COPPER BOLT SET IN A HOLE IN A ROCK.
1/1/1934 by CGS (SEE DESCRIPTION)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1934 (KGC) ON THE HIGH HILL OF THAT NAME, BETTER KNOWN AS ASTICOU HILL, LOCATED ABOUT 0.4 MILE E OF THE HEAD OF NORTHEAST HARBOR. THE STATION IS ABOUT 300 FEET SW OF THE HIGHEST PEAK OF THE MOUNTAIN AND 13 FEET W OF THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE LEDGE ON WHICH THE STATION IS LOCATED. THE ORIGINAL COPPER BOLT WAS LEFT IN PLACE AS THE STATION MARK AND 2 REFERENCE MARKS, STANDARD BRONZE DISKS WEDGED IN DRILL HOLES IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK, WERE INSTALLED. TO REACH FROM NORTHEAST HARBOR, GO N ON HIGHWAY 198 ABOUT 1 MILE AND TAKE ROAD LEADING SE, THE TRAIL TO THE SUMMIT LEAVES THIS ROAD TO THE LEFT AFTER PASSING 2 CLEARINGS ON THE LEFT, FOLLOW TRAIL TO SUMMIT THENCE SW TO THE STATION. THE LEDGE ON WHICH THE STATION IS LOCATED IS IN A CLEARING AND THE HARBOR CAN BE SEEN VERY CLEARLY FROM IT.
1/1/1944 by CGS (SEE DESCRIPTION)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1944 (FLP) STATION AND REFERENCE MARKS WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. DISTANCES TO THE REFERENCE MARKS WERE MEASURED AND CHECKED. THE DESCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE EXCEPT THE STATION IS NOW ABOUT 400 FEET SW OF THE SUMMIT OF THE HILL ON AN OPEN LEDGE INSTEAD OF 300 FEET.
