I was a bit deceived to not find one of the round markers at the tower, so I decided to give a try on that one while I was waiting for the other members of today's hike to reach the summit. I remembered about a comment regarding some bushwacking to the benchmark. Yikes, a bushwack it was! No matter if you try this one in winter or summer, the vegetation is pretty thick.
But what a rewarding find. You feel like you're alone out there. An awesome view, no one around and a nice outcrop to sit and enjoy.
Benchmark was in excellent condition and right on the coordinates.

This was a neat one to find. The underbrush getting to it was extremely thick but I made it and found the bench mark. I am sure the reference marks are somewhere there too but I couldn't find them. A good portion of the rock outcrop where the reference marks are located is now covered with trees. I imagine 70years ago the entire rock outcrop was bare but its grown in quite nicely now.
[Photos:]It's in excellent shape.

This is the information for the Azimuth mark for PID 2140 designation LYON. I followed the directions from 1/1/1961 this is a direct copy from the data sheet. (TO REACH FROM THE TOWN HALL IN DANNEMORA, GO WESTERLY ON STATE HIGHWAY NO. 374 FOR 9.0 MILES TO SIDE ROAD LEFT AT SIGN FOREST SERVICE FIRE TOWER LYON MOUNTAIN. TURN LEFT AND GO SOUTHERLY ON SURFACED ROAD FOR 1.8 MILES TO SIDE ROAD RIGHT. (CONTINUE SOUTHERLY ON SURFACED ROAD FOR 1.75 MILES TO LOG CABIN ON LEFT (EAST) SIDE OF ROAD AND AZIMUTH MARK ON LEFT AS DESCRIBED).
2008 Updated Directions
To reach from the prison in Dannemora go westerly on State Highway number 374 for approximately 9.0 miles to Chazy Lake Road. Turn left and go southerly on Chazy Lake Road for approximately 1.8 miles to a side road on the right, now known as the Lowenburg road. The Lowenburg road is not marked, it is a minimum maintenance road and it is gravel. This is the road to take if you want to climb Lyon Mountain there is a parking area at the end and the hiking trail starts from the parking area. Do not take the Lowenburg road to find the Azimuth mark. Continue southerly on Chazy Lake Road for approximately 1.9 miles to house on left (East side of road and Azimuth mark on left as described.
Description of Azimuth mark from Data sheet
A STANDARD DISK SET IN A ROUND CONCRETE MONUMENT AND STAMPED LYON 1942 RESET 1961 IS 102 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE APPROXIMATE CENTERLINE OF SURFACED ROAD, 34-1/2 FEET WEST OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF A LOG CABIN AND 11 FEET NORTHEAST OF TWO SMALL APPLE TREES.
Description is still pretty accurate but the Log Cabin is now covered with a cream colored mud, concrete, or stucco like finish and the two small apple trees are quite huge now some 47 years later. I visited in the winter and there was no one living there but it looks like it may be used as a summer home. It was a neat find following directions from 47 years ago.
