Discovered while vacationing with the family.

We really had to search for this one. The coords had us on the wrong side of the road for awhile. The description helped us, though.

Found while on a geocaching trip.

Found this one while on a road trip from British Columbia, Canada to Colorado. Did the nearby cache so thought we'd check this out as well. It was in good shape, a great area.

Bench Mark X 8 was recovered as described, in good condition.

Easily found at the toe of the road fill, in good condition. Note that the NGS coords for X8 and J162 are reversed.

This mark falls near the 45th parallel which is also the border between Montana and Wyoming.

The 45th Parallel actually is about 1/2 mile North from this position, for whatever reason the boundary between the two states jogs down through this area and then goes back up to the 45th.

Not sure why the sign is sitting here, other than the fact that somebody knew that the state line is near here and then assumed that the 45th would be at this point.

The 45th Parallel.

There are a couple of benchmarkers in the area and also a geocache. Didn't notice the coordinates being off, I used a topo map for this one.

Good condition. Description adequate. Coordinates off quite a bit.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
