Finally took time to stop and look for this benchmark. Knew it was here - can't see it from the highway. The last 2 times past here I kept saying 'next time I'm over here'. Today added it to the route and stopped to find it on the way to Alpena. Frosty, chilly but sunny morning. Nice quick brisk walk there and back.

Took a few minutes of searching. About 120' off posted coords. Marker is just off the main trail clearly within view from trail. Future seekers may wish to try 45* 21.474N, 084* 12.542W. Pics attached.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1934 0.7 MI SE FROM ONAWAY. 0.7 MILE SOUTHEAST ALONG THE DETROIT AND MACKINAC RAILWAY FROM THE STATION AT ONAWAY, PRESQUE ISLE COUNTY, 0.2 MILE WEST OF MILEPOST 168, 10 RAILS WEST OF THE CROSSING OF U.S. HIGHWAY 23, 17 YARDS NORTH OF THE NORTH RAIL, AND 1 YARD SOUTH OF A FENCE. A STANDARD DISK STAMPED G 37 1934 AND SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE POST PROJECTING 1 FOOT ABOVE GROUND.

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in 1992. * This is a POSTED BENCH MARK height. Code A indicates a distribution rate of 0.0 thru 1.0 mm/km.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
