DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1945 (JCT) STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 35 MILES AIRLINE WNW OF SALMON, ABOUT 15 MILES AIRLINE WSW OF SHOUP, AND ABOUT 3-1/4 MILES AIRLINE NNE OF THE JUNCTION OF THE SALMON AND MIDDLE FORK RIVERS. IT IS ON TOP OF A PARTLY TIMBERED ROCKY MOUNTAIN KNOWN AS LONG TOM MOUNTAIN AT THE HEAD OF LONG TOM CREEK. THE STATION IS SET IN BEDROCK OUTCROPING, 6 FEET N OF ROCK CLIFF, AND 4 FEET S OF THE SE CORNER OF A LOOKOUT TOWER. THE MARK IS A U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, FOREST SERVICE BRONZE DISK, STAMPED LONG TOM MOUNTAIN R.M. 1924. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS NE OF THE STATION, SET FLUSH IN BEDROCK ABOUT 15 FEET LOWER THAN STATION ON AN E PROJECTION OF A ROCK CLIFF, AND IS ABOUT 30 FEET SE OF A FLAGPOLE. IT IS A BRONZE REFERENCE DISK AND IS STAMPED LONG TOM MTN. USFS NO 1 1945. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS W OF THE STATION, 20 FEET WSW OF THE SW CORNER OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER, AND IS SET FLUSH IN BEDROCK OUTCROPPING WHICH PROJECTS 4 INCHES. IT IS A BRONZE REFERENCE DISK AND IS STAMPED LONG TOM MTN. USFS NO 2 1945. TO REACH STATION FROM THE POST OFFICE AND STORE AT NORTH FORK WHICH IS 21.55 MILES N OF SALMON ON U.S. HIGHWAY 93, GO W ALONG THE N SIDE OF THE SALMON RIVER ON GRADED ROAD FOR 10.5 MILES TO THE INDIANOLA RANGER STATION. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD ON RIVER ROAD FOR 6.5 MILES TO SIDE ROAD RIGHT AT SIGN SPRING CREEK. TURN RIGHT, N, OFF RIVER ROAD AND FOLLOW FOREST ROAD UP CANYON FOR 2.25 MILES TO FORK (LOG CABIN AND FIELD IN CENTER OF FORK), TAKE LEFT FORK AND GO UP CANYON AND THEN UP MOUNTAIN-SIDE FOR 11.8 MILES TO FORK AND SIGN SALMON RIVER AND SHOUP. HERE TAKE RIGHT FORK AND GO 0.3 MILE TO FORK. TAKE LEFT FORK AND GO 0.35 MILE TO FORK, THENCE LEFT LOWER FORK (RIGHT UPPER FORK GOES TO BLUE NOSE LOOKOUT CABIN WHICH CAN BE SEEN) AND GO 2.05 MILES TO FORK. TAKE SHARP LEFT FORK AS PER SIGN LONG TOM LOOKOUT AND GO 5.2 MILES TO FORK. TAKE RIGHT FORK ON MAIN-TRAVELED ROAD AND GO 0.4 MILE TO FORK, TAKE LEFT FORK AS PER SIGN LONG TOM AND GO 9.3 MILES TO FORK, TAKE LEFT FORK AS PER SIGN LONG TOM AND GO 1.75 MILES. HERE KEEP LEFT, STRAIGHT AHEAD AND GO 2.55 MILES TO END OF TRUCK TRAVEL AT END OF ROAD AND LOOKOUT CABIN. STATION IS JUST S OF THE LOOKOUT.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in July 1992.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
