This benchmark was next to city hall, passed by it on the way to the park.

I work downtown and walk by City Hall almost every day - noticed this one today and thought I better log it. :) Fun find! :)

Found this one on a recent trip to Portland.

You can always find something funny wandering around downtown...

I needed a nice walk today at lunch and picked this benchmark to go for. It's always nice to get out and away from cubicle life.

Found this one at lunch. Easy find. The 2009 comment on the Datasheet is spot on.

Recovered this flat-faced disk in good condition per the 1935 description - with one exception:
- The mark is now 1.15 feet above the sidewalk.

(Among the tall buildings, our handheld GPS could not find enough satellites to obtain decent coordinates.)

(For anyone else that goes looking for this; one correction to patw’s 8/11/2002 log: This mark is not immediately below Portlandia. The mark is in front of City Hall which is 1 block south-southwest of the Portlandia sculpture.)

In the photo, the mark is to the left of the base of the lamp post. The disk is set vertically in the base of the double columns that are closest to the “C” in “CITY HALL”.

Downtown today checking out marks.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991. WARNING-Repeat measurements at this control monument indicate possible vertical movement.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
