Janbo was going CRAZY to find a benchmark. Had a good time TFTH!!!

Found it tonight with the etrex by Garmin we were N 45 32.478 W 122 41.801.

Pretty easy find with the discription though.

Found while looking for other benchmarks.

Building is no longer occupied by CBI and is looking for a new tenant.

Recovered in good condition. Our Garmin nuvi 760 GPSr gave the coordinates as N 45° 32.478 W 122° 41.796 (with “20 foot accuracy”).

As fjord said in his previous post, the mark is on the side of a beautiful old red brick building with glass blocks around the door.
The name at the top of the building and above front doors is “CBI” (Coffee Bean International). You can also still read another sign on the front that says: “W.P. FULLER & CO. STORE.” (the building also says “For Lease” so I suppose there is a possibility that the CBI sign might not hang around.)
The address of the building is 2181 Nicolai Street. This is at the “Y” intersection of NW Nicolai St. and NW Sherlock Ave.

Differences from the 1934 description:

  • The disk is not on the south side of the building – it is on the adjacent southeast face of the building. (The south side has the front door and the disk is not on that face.)
  • The mark is 103.5 feet east from where the center of N.W. 22nd avenue tees into Nicolai Street.
  • The mark is 8 inches northeast of the corner of the angle in the wall.
  • The mark is 7.5 inches above the sidewalk.
  • The mark is 11 feet approximately north of the center of a utility pole.

found it easy find

The survey disk in good condition. The company that's in the building is not CIB, it's CBI. I've worked there for 4 years & I never knew that was there.

Found in great sahpe, on the side of a red brick building. Name on building CIB. The building is a cool old brick structure, the door into it has glass blocks around it, and the structure is not square.
Fun easy find.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
