I'm just learning to discover benchmarks - which I love to find while geocaching. But I am quickly discovering that having the description of the benchmark rather than the coordinates are sometimes more helpful. I was about 50 feet or more from the actual benchmark, so didn't find it. I was looking near the guardrail of where the road and the bridge meet....which was where the coordinates were leading me. Oh, well. I found the one across the street from where I was, so that made me happy. I really appreciate the placement photos people take. The ones from the finders before this note were very helpful!

Recovered in good condition with the following changes/additions to the 1987 description:

  • Found at 41.6 feet northwest of the painted centerline of Highway 101.
  • Found at 70 feet northeast of the center of the driveway gate.
  • Mark is 5.8 feet northwest of Tillamook P.U.D. utility pole 131810. (The original pole was cut off at the base and you can still see where it used to be. The new pole is still marked “131810” but we did not see any “A23” label).
  • Mark is 2.95 feet southeast of a fence.
  • The mark is 2 feet south-southeast of a metal “U.S.B.M.” witness post.

(Our Garmin nuvi 760 GPS gave the location as: N 45° 13.767 W 123° 51.782 (with “18 Foot Accuracy”)).

Top of the photo is roughly northwest.
photoRD1053 - Looking approximately west.
We placed an orange marker on top of the disk for the photo.
photoRD1053 - Looking northeast – wide.
RD1053 can’t be seen due to grass but it is just a little bit to the right of the witness post. (Note: RD1052 is located just to the left of the left sign post for the green sign in the distance (at the right side of the photo)).

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
