Looking East after crossing bridge. Benchmark is under the grate to the right in this photo. Partly under the rail tie.

Out with good friends for a little adventure along the railway. Disk is still in tact

Recovered in good condition in the west concrete abutment of the steel truss railroad bridge over the Nehalem River at Salmonberry.
The Salmonberry railroad station mentioned in the 1934 report is gone.
The mark is 401 feet west the Foss Road crossing signpost which has a mileage label of 815.8 on it (note that the crossing itself is gone - the December 2007 storm/flood washed out the automobile road bridge and the adjacent railroad track).
The mark is 5.4 feet southwest of the center of the southwestern-most rail and is below the rails under a galvanized walkway grating and a railroad tie.
As MegaScooter mentioned, the west half of the disk is covered by the railroad tie.

Our GPS (HH2) gave the mark’s coordinates as: N 45° 45.037 W 123° 39.229

photoRD1266 - Looking approx.east-southeast - wide.
Looking approximately east-southeast from the pre-2007 automobile crossing. The arrow points to the location of the mark on the far side of the railroad bridge. Although it is not readable in the photo, the mileage marker on the crossing sign says “MP 815.8”. On the left side of the photo you can see where the Salmonberry river dumps into the Nehalem (the Salmonberry parallels the RR tracks).

Recovered half covered by a RR tie. If you approach this mark from the south, you must wade the Nehalem river. The bridge is washed out along with some of the tracks.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
