Out looking for a nearby geocache - took quite a while to spot this - a bit overgrown. I was eating lunch and wandering around after a diligent search when I just happened to look down and there it was!

TEAM H made the find, wesser26, gjhimages. we came up here for the 5 caches but really for the bonus caches which will finish the challenge of show your cache some love, needed a puzzle that hadn't been found in over a yr. plus 2 other different type caches. so after a long drive up here we got the parking cache and started hiking, for some reason we went past the 1/2 mile part but never saw the road going up, so decided the cache was getting further and further. so up the mtn. we went pretty soon found another trail then the road towards the top. found everything a ok plus what a view today, then off we go back down only this time follow the road and see that we didn't go far enough the first time so after less than a mile we get to the bonus cache yes! we found it, now we can do whatever, look at the gps and see the other cache sedum is only 1.3 down the road ask my brother should we?? he said i guess its not that far, if he only knew the scramble we had to do i bet he would have said NO. so after a 5 terrain bushwack we made it to the top, cache in hand in less then 2 min. but how do we get down? i kinda wanted to go the opposite way down but it looked bad, so went down the way we came up. now for the bonus cache its this far away but if we bushwack down another hill it could be shorter, common sense prevailed we followed the long way down, got to GZ and started looking i was worried after reading other peoples logs but i found it after only 5 mins. now for the long hike back whew!!! i think he said we did over 10 miles total. he took pictures of the benchmarks so sure he will post them somewhere. a very tired day, but a good tired. thanks for the adventure Paul D K.

No views today. Too cloudy.

First snow of the season has arrived. A few inches cover the old LO site, but they have melted off around the BM disc.

I was backpacking in this area last month and as I was looking on the map I spotted Mowich Butte and decided I had to go there.
The to reach is no longer valid as the Forest Service has abandon most of this road. The road is still accessible as a trail and may be accessible from Hemlock Lake Recreation Area. I also noticed on the map that you may be able to use NF43 to whats left of NF41 (Lookout Mtn Rd) and approach Mowich Butte from the west. My route was to head south on the PCT from Fish Creek trailhead for 4.5 miles to the abandon Lookout Mtn Rd. Then west on the abandon road for 2 mile or so. You can follow the abandon road all the way to the top and the mark.
The Mark is in good condition. Searched for Reference Mark no 1, but did not find it. Was not prepared for that amount of digging. Located Reference Mark no 2 which is in good condition. Did not look for Azimuth Mark at this time as I was running out of time.
9/04/11 I returned today to check out an easier to reach. If you follow NFDR 43 from Hemlock Lake Recreation Area until you reach NFDR 41. Head east on NFDR 41 until you reach the imaginary gate (WGS84 N 45°47.917 W 122°02.175). Pack from here is about a mile. Head east on the abandon rd until you a junction, left will take you to Mowich Butte and the benchmark. Continue east about 1/2 a mile to the Azimuth Mark. Recovered the Azimuth Mark in good condition, Rebuild Rock cairn to mark location. Made another search for reference mark no 1, which I now believe is no longer there.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in December 1991.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The X, Y, and Z were computed from the position and the ellipsoidal ht.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The ellipsoidal height was determined by GPS observations and is referenced to NAD 83.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
