Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1878 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1878 (CR) STATION IS ON THE NOSE OF A HIGH RIDGE ON THE FARM BELONGING TO MR. NORTON MERRILL AND SW OF THE BRIDGE ACROSS TIDE CREEK. THE STATION IS MARKED BY A DRILL HOLE FILLED WITH LEAD IN A LARGE CONICAL ROCK. THREE CEDAR STAKES WERE SET AS FOLLOWS--N 1.79 METERS, S 1.83 METERS, AND E 1.86 METERS. THREE COPPER TACKS IN A TRIANGULAR BLAZE ON A WHITE FIR TREE BEARS S 73 DEG W, MAGNETIC, DISTANT 9.769 METERS.
01/01/1934 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1934 (LCJ) NOT RECOVERED. STATION SITE WAS SEARCHED OVER CAREFULLY BY THE RECONNAISSANCE PARTY AND ALSO BY THREE MEMBERS OF THE TRIANGULATION. NATIVES WHO HAD LIVED CLOSE BY FOR MANY YEARS WERE INTERVIEWED TO NO AVAIL. NO TRACE OF ANY LARGE CONICAL ROCK AS MENTIONED COULD BE FOUND. THE SITE IS NOW COVERED WITH SECOND GROWTH TIMBER APPROXIMATELY 70 FEET IN HEIGHT.
01/01/1937 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1937 (RWK) STATION RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED ABOUT 250 METERS SW OF THE HIGHWAY BRIDGE OVER TIDE CREEK, NEAR THE TOP OF A STEEP NARROW RIDGE ON THE SIEFERT FARM. THE RIDGE CONTINUES TO RISE SLIGHTLY FOR A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 13 METERS BEYOND THE STATION, THE LATTER BEING ABOUT 6 METERS S OF THE INTERSECTION OF A LINE DRAWN UP THE CENTER OF THE RIDGE AND A LINE DRAWN ALONG THE AXIS OF A SLIGHT RISE EXTENDING FROM THE MAIN RIDGE IN A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION. A SUBSURFACE MARK WAS ESTABLISHED, A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED MERRILL 1878, CEMENTED INTO A SHORT SECTION OF 4-INCH CAST-IRON SOIL PIPE, BURIED ABOUT 2-1/2 FEET. THE ORIGINAL SURFACE MARK WAS REPLACED.
01/01/1952 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1952 (GEB) THE STATION WAS RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED BY R.W.K. IN 1937 AND THE MARK WAS FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE STATION IS ABOUT 2-1/4 MILES NORTHWEST OF DEER ISLAND STORE, 250 METERS SOUTHWEST OF U.S. HIGHWAY 30 AT THE BRIDGE OVER TIDE CREEK, (0.1 MILE SOUTHERLY OF HIGHWAY MILE POST 37), AND NEAR THE TOP OF THE STEEP, NARROW RIDGE ON THE SOUTHEAST SIDE OF TIDE CREEK. THE RIDGE CONTINUES TO RISE SLIGHTLY FOR A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 13 METERS BEYOND THE STATION, THE LATTER BEING ABOUT 6 METERS SOUTH OF THE INTERSECTION OF A LINE DRAWN UP THE CENTER OF THE RIDGE AND A LINE DRAWN ALONG THE AXIS OF A SLIGHT RISE EXTENDING FROM THE MAIN RIDGE IN A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION. THE STATION MARK IS A LEAD PLUG IN A DRILL HOLE IN A BURIED BOULDER, 5 INCHES BY 3 INCHES, FLUSH WITH THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. IT IS 4.804 METERS SOUTHEAST OF STATION MERRILL 2 1937 AND AT ABOUT THE SAME ELEVATION. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE INTERSECTION AT DEER ISLAND STORE GO NORTH ON U.S. HIGHWAY 30 FOR 2.3 MILES TO THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL AT THE SOUTHEAST SIDE OF THE BRIDGE AT TIDE CREEK. FROM THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL PACK SOUTHWEST UP THE STEEP SLOPE TO THE SHOULDER OF THE RIDGE AND THE STATION, ABOUT A 20 MINUTE PACK.
01/01/1980 by NGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1980 (CLN) THE STATION WAS RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. IT IS ON A TIMBERED BLUFF ABOUT 2 MILES NORTHWEST OF DEER ISLAND ON LAND OWNED BY WILLIAM O. SEFFERT TO REACH FROM THE POST OFFICE IN DEER ISLAND GO NORTHERLY ON HIGHWAY 30 FOR 2.2 MILES TO A PRIVATE DRIVE ON LEFT, TURN LEFT AND GO 0.05 MILE TO SEFFERT RESIDENCE AND END OF TRUCK TRAVEL. PACK NORTHWEST UP THROUGH A PASTURE TO A SADDLE, TURN NORTH THROUGH TIMBER TO EDGE OF BLUFF AND STATION. THE STATION IS A LEAD PLUG IN A DRILL HOLE IN A BOULDER, FLUSH WITH THE GROUND, 4.793 METER. SOUTHEAST OF TRI STATION MERRILL 2, 6 METERS SSE OF TREE WITH WITNESS SIGN, 2.1 M NORTH OF A 16 INCH IN DIAMETER TREE WITH PUBLISHERS PAPER PROPERTY LINE SIGN AND 1.9 METERS W OF THE TOP EDGE OF THE BLUFF

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in October 1991.
  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
