I rode my bike into the Republic Mine property today to take some photos and recover the two stations on the property. I have been interested in this site for some time, and have tried to photograph it over about the past 9 years as the plant and buildings were demolished and removed, and the pit was flooded with water. I took photos from the bottom of the pit as the flooding was just beginning, and have a few rocks at home collected from the bottom, which is now under several hundred feet of water. The property was recently sold, and Lindberg Construction was at the site during my visit crushing gravel.

While at the mine site, I rode a little over 7 miles, including a trip to the top of one of the waste piles, and completely around the pit. According to my track log, the vertical elevation change from where I parked to the top of the pile was about 250 feet. I believe the second pile is a bit taller, but I didn't attempt that one today. It would offer a nice overview of the Republic Wetlands Preserve, and portions of South Republic. In all, I put a little over 7 miles on the bike today.

This station was recovered in good condition. RM 3 disk has been removed, but the stem remains. RM 4 was not found, and believed destroyed by a newer road, or a widening of the existing road.

Also interesting is the numbering of the reference marks. Only two were set, but numbered RM 3 and RM 4. I assume this is because this station was set when REPUBLIC, RK0574, and its reference marks were destroyed. RK0574 Used RM 1 and RM 2.

Just don't get confused when my knapsack and camera bag aren't there!

I searched minimally for RM 4. It is described as being set in a boulder to the north of the center of the road. My handheld placed the coordinates in the existing road. It may be there, but I didn't look too hard for it.
photoWide view of RK0572 and RK0575 Location
As noted in the photo, this view was shot from the public observation platform, on the northwest side of the mine pit. I have labeled the approximate locations of both RK0572 (believed destroyed) and RK0575.
photoWhat is this?
I found this equipment, which has the appearance of stainless steel, affixed to the top of a pipe cemented in the ground. It is near the location of RK0575, but about 50 feet closer to the edge of the ridge. Anyone know its purpose?
photoA wider view
Here's a wider view showing the item in question, and an overveiew of the mine pit. REPUBLIC 2, RK0575, is located about 50 feet behind me.
