1977 recovery distances and bearings confusing or in error. Use the original and 1943 descriptions.

Station, RM 1 (east post) and RM 2 (south post) found in good condition. RM 3 (west post) not found and may have eroded out or was packed away by whoever left the undocumented Carsonite WP which was vandalized and found broken 80 feet northeast - pieces were stubbed in by the two tagged trees.

A flat lake allowed kayak access directly below the station and also a definitive search - clear, shallow water and rock shelves - for the missing RM 3 (west post).

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1908 (WB) ABOUT DUE SOUTH OF WEST END OF SAND ISLAND, ABOUT 30 FEET FROM ROCK BLUFF AT SHORE. STATION MARK IS COPPER BOLT AT CENTER OF CROSS IN TOP OF STONE POST 8 INCHES SQUARE. THREE STONE REFERENCE POSTS. SIMILARLY MARKED ARE EAST, SOUTH, AND WEST, EACH 15 FEET FROM STATION. BEARINGS AND DISTANCES FROM STATION TO THREE BALSAM TREES ARE S 69 DEG 35 MIN E, 50 FEET. S 28 DEG 22 MIN E, 31.2 FEET. S 25 DEG 49 MIN W, 39.6 FEET.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1943 (GCM) STATION RECOVERED AND FOUND AS DESCRIBED. ALL MARKS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS-- STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 10 MILES NE OF CORNUCOPIA, ON THE S SHORE OF LAKE SUPERIOR, AT A POINT ABOUT DUE S OF THE W END OF SAND ISLAND. IT IS 20 FEET S OF THE BLUFF THAT IS AT THE LAKE SHORE AND IS FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. THE STATION AND THREE REFERENCE MARKS ARE IDENTICAL. THEY ARE A DRESSED SANDSTONE POST, 4- BY 4-INCHES, WITH THE LETTERS U.S. CARVED IN THE TOP OF THE STONE. THERE IS A TRIANGULAR PLUG, OR BOLT, WITH A PUNCH MARK IN THE CENTER LEADED INTO A DRILL HOLE TO MARK THE TRUE POINT. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS E OF THE STATION. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS S OF THE STATION. REFERENCE MARK 3 IS W OF THE STATION AND ABOUT 2 FEET SE OF THE BLUFF. ALL REFERENCE MARKS ARE FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. THERE IS NO SUITABLE PLACE FOR AN AZIMUTH MARK. TO REACH THE STATION FROM CORNUCOPIA, GO NE ON STATE HIGHWAY 13 FOR 6.0 MILES TO A CROSSROAD. THEN TURN LEFT ON A DIRT ROAD FOR 2.8 MILES, FOLLOWING THE MAIN ROAD TO A SUMMER HOME AT THE LAKE SHORE AND THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL. FROM HERE, FOLLOW THE MAIN OPEN TRAIL NE FOR ABOUT 0.7 MILE TO A SMALL BEACH. THE TRAIL IS BLAZED FROM THIS POINT. CONTINUE NE, FOLLOWING ALL LEFT-HAND FORKS IN THE TRAIL AND FOLLOWING ALONG THE LAKE SHORE TO A SMALL CLEARING AND A TRIANGLE BLAZE AT THE N EDGE OF THE CLEARING. THEN PROCEED ON THE BEACH FOR ABOUT 300 YARDS TO AN OVERHANGING BIRCH TREE (BLAZED). THEN BEAR RIGHT, UP BANK, AND FOLLOW BLAZED TRAIL AND OLD LOGGING ROAD TO THE STATION. ABOUT A 2.5 MILE (ONE HOUR) PACK. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK - 18 METERS.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1953 (DAJ) STATION WAS RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED BY G.C.M. IN 1943 AND ALL MARKS FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. A CHECK WAS MADE OF THE DISTANCES TO THE REFERENCE MARKS AND WAS FOUND TO BE CORRECT. NO OBJECTS WERE VISIBLE FROM THE GROUND. THEREFORE NO CHECK WAS MADE OF THE DIRECTION TO THE REFERENCE MARKS. THE 1943 TO REACH DESCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE.

RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1977 (WOM) STATION, REFERENCE MARKS 1,2,3 WERE RECOVERED, THE STATION MARK IS 6 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE EDGE OF BLUFF, 13 FEET SOUTHWEST OF AN 8 INCH BIRCH TRIANGULAR BLAZED TREE, REFERENCE MARK NUMBER 1 IS ABOUT 6 FEET FROM THE EDGE OF BLUFF, 2 FEET SOUTHEAST OF A 2 INCH IRON PIPE WITH CAP AND ABOUT 2 FEET HIGH, REFERENCE MARK NUMBER 2 IS NEAR THE EDGE OF BLUFF, REFERENCE MARK NUMBER 3 IS IN THE EDGE OF THE BLUFF AND IS IN DANGER OF FALLING INTO THE LAKE. TO REACH FROM THE SISKIUT RIVER IN THE SMALL VILLAGE OF CORNUCOPIA GO NE ON STATE HIGHWAY 13 FOR 5.15 MILES TO A GRAVELED SHARP SIDE ROAD RIGHT, CONTINUE AHEAD FOR 2.6 MILE TO A ANGLING SIDE ROAD LEFT, SAND POINT ROAD, BEAR LEFT ON GRADED ROAD FOR 0.5 MILE TO A FORK. KEEP LEFT FORK AND GO FOR 4.5 MILES TO A TRACK ROAD LEFT. TURN LEFT WESTERLY ON TRACK ROAD FOR 0.7 MILE TO A TRACK ROAD RIGHT. TURN RIGHT AND GO NORTHERLY FOR 0.4 MILE TO THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL, FROM HERE PACK EASTERLY FOR 0.15 MILE TO STATION ALONG THE SHORE LINE, OR A FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE TRUCK CAN BE DRIVEN THE LAST 0.15 MILE BY FOLLOWING OLD DIM TRAIL TO STATION SITE, ON THE LEFT. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN ABOUT 10 MILES NORTHEAST OF CORNUCOPIA.

  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
