Found it.

The water tank is long gone but the concrete support and tool shed is still there. Found it easily.

The description for this benchmark was much more helpful than the coordinates. Our coordinates were off by about by about 75 feet and way too far from the centerline of the mainline tracks to be correct, so we kept plugging away. Once we got close, it was an easy find, as the marker was clear with no debris covering it. Yay!

The marker was clearly visible once we got close enough to its actual location.

The marker is, indeed, "13.7 feet north of centerline" of the main track. This rail line is quieter now than when the marker was placed, but there's still activity.

ABOUT 120 FEET SOUTHEAST OF SOUTHEAST CORNER OF NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILWAY STATION. 13.7 FEET NORTH OF CENTERLINE OF N.P.RY. MAIN TRACK. 4.1 FT. SOUTH OF SOUTH SIDE OF TOOL HOUSE UNDER WATER TANK. 1 FT. NORTH OF CONCRETE PILLAR SUPPORTING WOODEN COLUMN TO WATER TANK.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991. WARNING-Repeat measurements at this control monument indicate possible vertical movement.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
