Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1946 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1946 (EBB) THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 6-1/2 MILES AIRLINE SOUTH SOUTHEAST OF KOSMAS, 12-1/2 MILES AIRLINE SOUTHWEST OF RANDLE, ON A HIGH PEAK KNOWN AS VANSON PEAK, AND IS ABOUT 22 FEET NORTH OF THE LOOKOUT HOUSE. THE MARK IS A STANDARD BRONZE DISK SET IN OUTCROP ON THE CREST OF THE NARROW RIDGE FLUSH WITH THE GROUND SURFACE. STAMPED VANSON 1946. THE STATION IS BEST REACHED BY OBTAINING A SPEEDER AND OPERATOR OR GUIDE FROM THE KOSMAS TIMBER COMPANY (WHOSE OFFICE IS ABOUT 1/2 MILE SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTER OF KOSMAS) TAKE SPEEDER ON THE KOSMAS TIMBER RAIL ROAD TOWARDS THE VANSON PEAK LOOKOUT FOR ABOUT 12 MILES (ABOUT 1 HOUR RIDE) TO A WHITE SHELTER CABIN AND TRAIL LEADING TO VANSON PEAK. FROM THE SHELTER CABIN CONTINUE ON FOOT UP GRADE ON THE VANSON PEAK TRAIL FOR ABOUT 3-1/2 MILES TO THE VANSON PEAK LOOKOUT HOUSE AND STATION. AN ALTERNATE ROUTE TO REACH FROM THE MAIN INTERSECTION IN KOSMAS GO WEST ON STATE HIGHWAY 5 FOR 5.8 MILES TO T ROAD AND SIGN NESIKA TURN LEFT ONTO GRAVEL ROAD AND CONTINUE FOR 2.4 MILES TO AN OLD MILL SITE AND END OF TRUCK TRAVEL (A TRUCK MAY BE DRIVEN ABOUT 0.2 MILE FARTHER AND A LIGHT CAR OR JEEP MAY BE DRIVEN ABOUT 1 MILE BEYOND THIS POINT). FROM THE OLD MILL SITE OR THE END OF HEAVY TRUCK TRAVEL CONTINUE ON TRACK ROAD FOR ABOUT 1 MILE TO A TRAIL RIGHT AND SIGN VANSON PEAK L.O. TURN RIGHT ONTO TRAIL AND CONTINUE ON FOOT OR PACK STRING AS PER SIGN VANSON PEAK 9-1/2 MILES TO LOOKOUT HOUSE AND STATION. NOTE. IT IS ADVISED THAT A GUIDE BE OBTAINED ON EITHER ROUTE AS TRAIL FORKS ARE NOT MARKED AND TRAIL IS RAILROAD BED IN SEVERAL DISTANCES AND TURNOFFS ARE NOT MARKED, ALSO ON THE SPEEDER ROUTE THERE ARE SEVERAL FORKS AND SWITCHBACKS WHICH ARE NOT MARKED AND CANNOT BE FOLLOWED WITHOUT A GUIDE. REFERENCE MARK NO 1 IS A STANDARD REFERENCE DISK SET IN OUTCROP ON THE CREST OF THE NARROW RIDGE ABOUT 2-1/2 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION. STAMPED VANSON NO 1 1946. REFERENCE MARK NO 2 IS A STANDARD REFERENCE DISK SET IN OUTCROP ON THE EAST SLOPE OF THE RIDGE AND IS ABOUT 2 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION. STAMPED VANSON NO 2 1946. THE VANSON PEAK LOOKOUT HOUSE IS A LOW SQUARE (14X14) BUILDING, PAINTED WHITE, ON THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE PEAK. THERE IS NO AZIMUTH MARK FOR THIS STATION.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in December 1991.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
